Decided to try Mandarin Lotus after driving by and then reading about it. Given the write up and the prices ($25 to $45 per... entree), I was expecting an upscale experience, at least from a culinary point of view. Not even close. First, other than thewall of celebrity photos, it is pretty much a typical hole-in-the-wall dive of a Chinese restaurant. That ambiance is broughtdown to a new low by the food being served in styrofoam to-go boxes, and the tea being served in a styrofoam cup. I understandCovid changed the way people do things, but no restaurant I have been to pre- or post-Covid (including Chinese restaurants) hasserved sit-down food in a to-go box. I don't think the idea of serving on real dinnerware is asking too much. All that, however, would be tolerable if the food was up to the owner's obvious high opinion of it. The dumplings were average. The spring rollswere 1/2 the size of a typical spring roll and straight from the Cisco truck. The beef in the Maple Glazed Beef was obviouslyreheated. The Argentinian Chicken was terribly overcooked. The flavors were good but nothing special, and the preparation wasless than mediocre. And then there's the price: Spring rolls, dumplings, 2 dishes for a total bill of $115. Last time I checkedthat's real restaurant pricing where at the minimum they serve your food on actual dinnerware and you drink out of actualglasses. Even in LA I cannot believe more people don't comment on how outrageous the prices are for the quality of the food aswell as the dining experience. Maybe this place was special once upon a time, but last night it was a just a ridiculouslyoverpriced mediocre meal in a dreadfully pedestrian setting. Like others who have posted less than favorable reviews, I do notknow what restaurant the people who love this place ate in. If someone can tell me where that restaurant is, I would love to gothere. We came here on a weeknight for dinner after hearing the place. As other reviewers have pointed out, it's run by a husband and... wife. When we dined, I don't think I saw any other employee's in the restaurant and the service was still impeccable. We ordered7 dishes and loved most of them but I wouldn't say we were wowed by any. The prices are high per dish ($20) so the meal waspricey. They do have a lot of vegan options (170) so it's a great spot for Vegans Read more

One of my favorite restaurants and small businesses in the world, easily at the top of the list for Chinese and Chinese fusion.... I have been a loyal Mandarin Lotus customer for many years. The food is always very well prepared, and the owners are trulywonderful people. My former coworker and I made it a weekly destination, and I now bring takeout home to my family. The menuseems long, but it's neatly divided by protein choice, plenty choices for vegetarian and gluten-free upon request. Don't missChang's signature creations; try my favorite, the southwest chicken with Argentinian sauce. The chef is also very open to customorders if you have something in mind. Read more

At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, this is the best Asian Vegetarian/Vegan food in Los Angeles and environs....and possibly in... the known universe. The care that Dan takes with his amazingly original recipes is astonishing. And his wife Kim, who doeseverything else, is the loveliest person imaginable. We have eaten here dozens of times, trying all the vegan things listed onthe menu that I have never seen anywhere else and are always blown away. Its a new standard of excellence for vegan food!
