When the food is delicious but the service is abysmal... We arrived on a Saturday evening and were completely ignored for about... 10 minutes before we got a "hi, how many?" By one of the servers because the first host appeared overwhelmed. When we did get atable, our server was fairly prompt with getting us drinks, but then after delivering them he did not come back to the table. Wehad to wave him down after waiting over 30 minutes. During our wait we watched him have plenty of opportunity to come over, buthe completely avoided eye contact. Finally, when he did come he took our order and we had to wait an additional 40 minutes forour food. He doesn't cook the food, and it was a busy night, but we watched tables who arrived after us get friendly and fairlyprompt service from him while the 2 of us got excuses and half hearted apologies in the few times we did interact with him. Whenhe brought the food, it was delicious, but not worth the wait and poor attention. I don't expect perfection but the bareminimum of genuine friendliness and some attention would have made for a way better experience. I want to see my server havingfun and goofing around with their coworkers, I just also want to be taken care of in equal measure. Also, better teamwork wouldreally help with the wait times. None of the servers ran anyone elses food, only their own. I've never seen that before and Idon't know why they aren't helping eachother. Read more

The nachos are stellar, creative, eclectic, and in all ways simply perfect. Since nachos became a fad I have seen so many... restaurants give their best try and the typical results are disappointing to say the least. Everything else I have tried isexcellent as well. Read more

I've had a couple of great experiences with Akira in Aptos, and a couple of times where the food was just a bit flat. We got... hooked on the one in Santa Cruz and were excited when they opened in Aptos, but the food taste has been a little inconsistent. The Hamachi Kama is a great standout for me, and the rolls with fresh basil are tasty. We love the Spicy Jay-Oh. We've tried afew other rolls that just had no character even though they sounded interesting on the menu. We go back consistently as they aremy favorite in the area. One Caveat to my review, we do 90% of our orders to go which has an effect to quality that they can'thelp. I recommend it, but really think the menu could use some editing, it's too long and would help customers end up withtastier choices if the lineup was more 'curated'. Read more

Akira delivered on portion size and value, but it disappointed in almost every other category. The miso soup tasted good, if... not a bit watered down. My bigger issue was with the temperature: it was barely warm when it was served. On the whole, I wasreally happy with my dinner bento box (I chose sashimi and nigiri). The miso salad dressing was exceptional, but the salad wasotherwise remarkably simple: just spring mix. Some extra vegetables or nuts would add more color, texture, and variety. Thesushi tasted great, and the portions were enormous; actually, too big to even fit in my mouth, but that's not the worst problemto have. Here are my bigger issues with Akira: first, the slowness. It took ten minutes before my drink order was taken, andanother fifty before I got my food. I might have been a little more understanding if the server mentioned something about thewait, but he only came to my table twice the entire night. Second, the bathroom was pretty awful. It was severely vandalized, unkempt, and the hot water coming from the sink nearly burned by hand; there didn't appear to be a temperature regulator. Myexperience really came down to the service, and unfortunately, my server was basically absent throughout my entire visit. Idon't think I'll be back... Read more

Pretty terrible experience here. Our server was slow and unattentive. He also delivered our cups and plates with his fingers... inside and all over everything. Our dishes would sit on the counter by the sushi chefs for up to 5 minutes before he noticed anddelivered them. The other wait person would notice but she would not help and deliver his tables. You guys really need to worktogether. They were not busy by the way. The sushi chefs worked fast and put out a good product but the servers ruined theexperience. The music was loud and terrible. Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne and Guns and Roses was blaring the whole time. ???? The"happy hour" does not include any sushi or sashimi but the Sapporo beer was nice and cold. The Dark Side roll and Poke Nachoswere decent. I would not suggest this place, you can find much better authentic sushi places in Capitola and Santa Cruz. Read more
