The grill staff might give you a little sass, but overall the location is clean and modern. The grilled chicken sandwich I... ordered was good, albeit pricier that going outside. It's a trade off between grabbing a quick bite to eat and leaving themuseum for a couple of hours. Realistically, if you want to see as much of the museum as possible you would bring a lunch or eathere at the cafe. Read more
Visited in the last month. Much improved! Thank you! Management issues or budget cuts? On a Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.... stopped in for lunch....it took a 20 to 25 minute standing in line wait time to order 2 burgers and one quarter inch chickenbreast sandwich. Not sure what the problem is other than management issues or budget cuts. We have been museum members forseveral years, but will not be ordering from the grill again. Terzo Piano may be an alternative, otherwise there are many otherchoices we will make for lunch. We rarely post negative reviews, but this one begged to be written! Read more
The art institute cafe is a wonderful treasure. Free ice cold water..save money on the bottles. Food is made with fresh... ingredients; grill items made to order. Options for vegetarians and pizza lovers. As well as pick up and go sandwiches. Go to arestaurant on Michigan Ave and you will pay more with less quality. I had the best cupcake ever here. Thursday evening, I needed to get to a concert, thought this would be a quick place to grab a bite. Walked in, saw no... directional signage leading to the bar, hot food and cashier - just a seemingly abandoned food case with some cold drinks and$10 pre-packaged sandwiches. Finally found my way into the dining area, no one at the hot food bar, again no clear signage. Finally a very pleasant woman came and explained the menu, I ordered and went over to the bar to get a glass of wine. The solebarrista (responsible for both the member's lounge AND the cafe) was engaged for about 5 minutes in making an elaborate cocktailfrom the poorly organized back bar - there was another woman in front of me, so I grabbed a (reasonably priced) hard cider fromthe cold case. The kind woman from the hot food bar brought out my order (which was delicious), but since everything had takenso long due to the poorly laid out and understaffed situation I had to wolf down my food and run. But the self-bus station isat the OPPOSITE side of the room from the exit. The management responsible for this dining area really needs to get their acttogether as currently it is an embarrassment to the Art Instittute. Read more

Though the dishes appear to be prepared with care, the space is clean, and the staff is friendly, the price of a simple snack is... completely unreasonable. A small, snack sized bag of chips and a fountain drink = $7. I'm well aware that we are paying for morethan the food itself (the space, the staff, the convenience), but hopefully this review can remind you to pack your own snackand not rely upon the cafe for your trip to the museum. (There's more - after the initial fill, now the fountain drink machineis under maintenance and won't be available for 15 minutes... ) Read more
