This was one of the places I was most excited to try when coming to Chicago. I had never seen a roof top Chinese restaurant... before especially one that has a dumpling menu. My experience was interesting, firstly getting into the restaurant was a bit ofa challenge; but, that was partially due to my own fault. Just be sure to look for the signs as like me you may get lost. Ifyou enjoy a decent bar experience you may want to go to another place first then come here. There is a bar, but it's small andlacks some variation you'd see as places of similar price points. Instead they have a small outside bar that is nice, butdoesn't offer the options a true bar would support. I usually always enjoy a cocktail at the bar before dinner and instead wetook them to the table as the bar really wasn't conducive for that kind of experience. The atmosphere with the servers seemedmore formal and less social than I am used to. The hostess Kimberly was nice enough, and Paula my server was efficient. I had nocomplaints, but nobody made me or the table feel special. No long term connection that would make me feel like if I came backI'd want to say hello. Although, despite those minor details the food at Shanghai Terrace is great! I ordered Peking Duck,Shanghai Fried Noodles, Crab Siewmai, Shrimp Hot and Sour Soup, and Chinese Style Beef Tenderloin. I loved them all except theChinese Style Beef Tenderloin. I'm not sure what spice was in the Beer Tenderloin, but there was a flavor I just wasn't able toenjoy; although, my partner loved it so it just depends on your preferences. It does need to be called out that every bit offood is very well prepared and made with quality. If you come here for nothing else the Peking Duck is fantastic and I wish Igot more of it. Read more

We’re no strangers to fine dining, and no strangers to great street corner Chinatown restaurants. This was neither. Two stars... only because the atmosphere was outstanding. Server was sweet, and attentive. But this is a restaurant priced as if it had aMichelin star and yet far-from delivers on that promise. Let’s put it this way…the Chilean Seabass was deep-fried andslathered (no exaggeration) in sauce. It’s not advertised as fried. After you drilled through the 1/2-inch crust it was tasty;what’s left of it. Just…don’t… Read more

I was so pleased by the dim sum and the ambiance. However, they showed completely booked out on open table for two weeks. They... did let us walk in and seated us right away. I was disappointed to see that the restaurant was barely half full… for a placedbooked out on open table, that shouldn’t be the case. Regardless, I ordered the beef entry ($54) for 6 blocks of beef. Hard tobite into, not spicy as listed and when my server asked me why I didn’t finish it, his response was to order something elsenext time. I mean… seriously? Don’t ask me. The least he could have done was take it off the bill. As a tourist, Iwouldn’t Recommend this place. I wouldn’t return. The two stars are for the 4 pieces of dim sum I could eat ($16). I wholeheartedly believe if you are going to run an expensive restaurant with a view, your appetizers can be okay, drinks can be okay, but your main entry should NEVER leave your customer empty stomach. Outstanding food that is prepared with intention. We dined with our friends and all four of us loved our dishes. Everything was... so flavorful and uniquely prepared. Service was great and the roof top is a beautiful setting for dining. Read more
