Have been going to this bakery for well over 45 years. Love the newly remodeled space. The almond coffee cake was outstanding... as always. There were quite a few new items to be had. I went with the chocolate croissant. Absolutely delicious and awonderful "tunnel of fudge" inside. A definite must if you like old fashioned cake donuts, and their new surprises! Read more

I had an unexpected experience at Deerfields Bakery. Up until about 7 years ago, I had ordered all my kids' birthday cakes from... Deerfield because their decorations are so beautiful. I ordered my son's graduation cake about 2 weeks in advance of his party. I got an email from customer service asking for a copy of the image I wanted (I had already provided it to the girl who took myorder but that's ok. I didn't mind sending it again.) The customer service rep said that this image would be used for a"portrait" decoration on the cake. I was like, wait, what's portrait mean? She explained that a photographic image would beplaced on top of the cake. I told her that was not what I wanted. I wanted the university logo to be done with icing. Shesaid that 90% of college cakes are done with a portrait image so the girl who took my order probably assumed that's what Iwanted (she never gave me the option.) So I asked the customer service rep to please change the order for the cake to bedecorated with icing and she said she couldn't because changes are not allowed in the five days leading up to pick up. So itappears that Deerfield has a central ordering and service system that does not allow for much flexibility. So why 4 stars? Overall, the cake and sugar cookies I ordered were very good. But truthfully, I could have gotten a portrait cake from Jewelfor less than $75. It just wasn't special like Deerfield cakes used to be and their new system is so inflexible. Deerfields bakery was harder to find than a missing sock! If u follow Google Maps, u'll think the place was closed for bizness... as u pass by this abandoned building on Waukegan Rd. But the front door is off-street. There is also no street view singage Icould easily see. Front door was a zig-zag. Two doors to enter, but on different sides. I guess that helps with outside aircontrol in the winter/summer. Barkery felt dimly lit. 1st major display is the butter cookies all sold by the lb. Beautiful tolook at when fully stocked. The donut wall was enclosed on some levels and open on others. Not sure what the purpose of thatis. Protect some donuts but not others? I passed on either because of this. The cinnamon raisin cake looked interesting, so Ipicked that up. I also grabbed a few bagged sugar and cinnamon raisin cookies. The cookies were pretty boring. Little to thetaste, and little difference in taste between the types. I think they may use margerin or something else. Its like they have abase recipe and slightly modify it for peanut butter, cinnamon raisin, and sugar cookies. However, the cinnamon raisin bread isthe star of this review. After the dissapointing cookies, i was pleasantly surprised by how delicious & fluffy the bread was. Ithad a nice cinnamon suger crust, soft bread, & moist raisins (which stayed moist even after toasting). I'm not sure I can haveanother cinnamon raisin bread now. Cuz once u taste the best of something, its hard to go back. 3 stars for lack of signage,inconsistent donut enclosures, and the saving grace of the cinnamon raisin bread. Read more
