I?m always a bit leery of family-owned restaurants in small towns: it?s usually hit-or-miss. Better than a Google Rating, I... check to see how many cars are out front. We were in the mood for Mexican food as we were passing through Giddings and saw LosPatrones on the side of the highway with a healthy number of cars (not just pick-ups; pick-up drivers are generally less choosyabout their dining fare, I?ve found, then car drivers). Before we even opened the front door, Edward ?Lalo? was waiting for us,menus in hand. And as if he read our minds, passed some empty tables and sat us in a booth (we generally like booths, as we cansit beside each other). First up, a margarita on happy-hour ($2.50). And it wasn?t a small one, either. Served in a chilledmug. I felt they skimped a bit on the tequila, but the lime juice wasn?t as sugary sweet as most serve on happy-hour; the limewas perfect! Warm tortilla chips and salsa came almost immediately. I really like warmed tortilla chips. I order the beeftacos al carbon; Cyndi had a cheese enchilada with Charro beans and rice. The beans were very good, although a bit shy on thespices. The rice was not too dry, either. The beef in my tacos was tender and well cooked, although they didn?t taste as thoughthey were cooked over wood (my favorite type). What was most impressive was how friendly everyone was. And just watching thestaff from our booth, they moved with purpose and dedication ? no one languished or acted as though they had somewhere better tobe. Lalo practically skipped whenever he went somewhere! An old man at the front counter ? the owner, I presume ? made apurposeful ?Thank you for coming.? While the fare is basic Tex-Mex and nothing extraordinary, the way they make you feel, theattentiveness, and the sheer joy of being important to them makes this a stop we?ll remember. Read more
Really good food. Fast service, did not take long for my drink and my food to come out. The margarita was strong and good. The... chips and salsa was really good. Nice atmosphere, decent service, and food was good. Some issues arose but were corrected quickly. The Mexicanos Fajitas were... tender and flavorful. The enchilada was good. Rice and beans were the usual fare you get at other Mexican restaurants nothingspecial. Would recommend stopping by for lunch or dinner. Read more
