I had the apple berry salad with goat cheese. He had roast beef on a wick. Both were delicious. Great atmosphere. The large... parking lot is a plus but I still suggest getting there before noon or after one for lunch and by five for dinner. Otherwise youmay have a little wait. Read more

Not sure what has been going on with this place lately, but I Have had three mediocre meals in a row here. The first was on... Easter which I reserved far ahead of time for my family. We had very slow service, and our food was plated poorly and lukewarm. We went back for lunch a couple of weeks later, same thing. I stopped going for a while, but was late getting home last nightand decided to stop. I sat at the bar, and the bar staff provided EXCELLENT service. However, the food still came out like itwas thrown together and rushed, and the brisket burger AND fries were legitimately cold. Like actually. I remember when theRetreat was known to be high class, a sought after establishment. And we used to come as a family to the Retreat for certainholidays because it used to be guaranteed that our meals and experience were going to be top notch. But not sure what hashappened, but the experience and food quality is just not there anymore. And for the price, that is unacceptable. Sorry but Iwon't plan to come back any time soon. Hopefully things will get figured out because I used to love this place! Read more

Very disappointed. We have been here plenty of times over the years but this trip was a total waste. The app sampler was... tasteless. The burger was burnt and bun was stale. It also came smothered in toppings to the point they needed to be scrapedoff. The side salad was drenched with dressing and was rendered soggy and overpowered. We also ordered the seafood Neptune thatcame swimming in a tasteless sauce, very little seafood, and the seafood that was in the dish had an odd gritty texture. Thewaitress was nice but hostess seemed confused as to why we were waiting to be seated by the wait to be seated sign.Disappointing all around. Really not worth the time or money. Would encourage anyone to find another spot for dinner. Read more

The Retreat has indoor and outdoor bars and dining areas. We chose outdoor dining because covid was still surging in upstate New... York. Dinners come with a choice of salad or soup. The salad, with thousand Island dressing, was excellent after removing thetasteless, lye-cured black olive slices. The seafood chowder was also excellent getting our meals off to a good start. I orderedsauerbraten because I had read in a review that the restaurant was known for this classic German dish. The dinner with sides wasso large that it had to be served on two separate dinner plates. The sauerbraten and egg noodles with gravy on one, and the redcabbage, applesauce, 2 potato pancakes, and a side of sour cream on the second. Unfortunately, it did not live up to the sauerbraten I had had on a number of occasions at Danzers German Restaurant on Ainsley Drive. The meat was not cooked long andslow to tenderize it and the sweet/sour sauce was too sweet with too little contrasting red wine vinegar. On the other hand, thepotato pancakes and red cabbage were excellent, and the noodles were briefly fried to make them crispy on the edges. A very nicetouch. My wife had much better luck with the turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, squash and gravy.(also served on two plates), with enough leftovers for a full second meal at home.
