As a Southern Man I'm glad I found some biscuits almost as good as mommas. The gravy needs a bit more pepper but as I was told... when they made it that way people said it was too much pepper. So just add pepper and its wonderful. Read more

Great food and great atmosphere. This delightful restaurant reminded me of The Walton?s. Really homey, comfy furniture that was... just so nicely put together. Clean and great food with a smile. Big and little tables. Perfect for before or after a day spenton the slopes. One table for the kids and one for the parents. Great place! Read more

If you find yourself in Montpelier, Vermont, you simply must pop in to Down Home Kitchen. Although this place takes its cues... from the American South, it carries them through with all the food consciousness of Vermont. In the South, you almost never findmaple syrup on the table-- and here it flows like it's sugaring season. And, of course, on your breads you will get lots of realbutter, which in the South is almost always margarine. The Southern style menu prepared with New England ingredients is a totalwin. The ambiance is decidedly cheery, with windows wrapping around two sides of the restaurant and light blues, whites, andwood as accents. There is a large central communal table so that you can rub elbows with the locals: state house reps, dairyfarmers, hipsters, and families. There are lots of muddy boots and beanie hats in the crowd, so it really does feel likeVT-style home. They have a few novel details too that add to the Down Home of the place, including mismatched dishes (lovethis!) and a typewriter at the end of the bar. The blackened catfish plate was spicy and went perfectly with collard greens andcorn bread. Pancakes and sweeter breakfast offerings were perfectly prepared. Service was as fast as it gets up here, andfriendly all around. Read more

Down Home is my husband?s and my favorite place for breakfast. We try to make it in every couple of weeks if we have a day off... together. This morning when we went in to order our usual (eggs Benedict the River with home fries for me, and biscuits andgravy for him), my home fries came a bit undercooked. When our server made it over to check on us (it got pretty busy after wearrived), I was a few bites in to my Benedict, so when he asked if I?d like new ones I told him I probably won?t even need themanyway, so he said he would just take them right off the bill. Great! So I figured he?d take a couple dollars off. We finish ourmeals (husband practically licks his plate clean), and the second half of my sandwich has an over poached egg, with no runnyyolk, so I ate what I could, leaving just a little overdone egg behind, but still super full and satisfied. The sandwich wasstill delicious. Our server then cleared our plates and left our bill. When our bill was dropped off I noticed he took 5dollars off for the potatoes, which I thought was awesome and generous. Next thing I know, the hostess makes her way over to thetable to ask if we were the ones with the over cooked eggs on the River, so she could take the entire meal off the bill! Ihadn?t even complained about the egg since it was delicious anyway and filled me up. She said either way they like to make sureeverything is cooked to their standards so they didn?t want to charge us for it. I was super impressed, this is how customerservice should be. We recommended this place to everyone before this experience, and now I?ll have even more great things tosay about it. Keep up the good work! Read more
