This place is full of the best surprises. We were having people visiting and knew we needed a bigger restaurant to accommodate.... Brauhaus Schmitz came to mind and they took our reservation. I knew it was big on the inside, but then we were walked to amassive area. Honestly had no idea we were in a Philly restaurant anymore. The beers were great, the cheese sausage is one ofthe best I've ever tasted and our server was an absolute delight. Read more

If you like German beer and beer hall atmosphere, this is the place. However, we were mightily disappointed with the food. We... enjoyed the Schweinshaxe with the flambe option, made the skin crackled, the warm pretzel with brown mustard. The potatopancakes with apple sauce, and the bratwurst, not so much. The biggest disappointment was the wurst, they were so dried, theytasted very similar to some "slim jim". The accompanied red sauerkraut was so "vinegarly", borderline to bitter. I do notrecall having wurst and kraut like this in Germany. We like the atmosphere, and the beer selection. Will come back some timein the future, but this is not a place that we would go to often. Service was great. Our waiter did a fine job serving us. 18percent tip was added to our bill, very "un-germanly", you might say. Tips indicate something extra, dispensed by customers forgood service and done so voluntarily. If restaurant put it on the bill without customer's consent, it should put down as"service". Read more

Schnitzel was good. Batter could have been seasoned better. I wished instead of fries they would have spatzle instead. The... potato pancakes were very good. My wife had the sauerbraten and said it was good. Server was excellent. Be forewarned they add18% gratuity. Read more

Overall, a bit disappointed! Great beer selection nice ambiance, friendly staff. We weren't in a rush, but everything took a... really long time. In addition, the food I had was not that great. I grew up in Germany and have an idea what authentic Germanfood tastes like. While I do understand that the same food is prepared different depending on the region in Germany, and I alsoknow some restaurants in Germany have terrible food too. For my Bavarian taste buds, the food at Brauhaus Schmitz was not thatgreat. The food took forever. We were a bigger group (8) sitting in the back room which was almost empty. I guess this is athing now, but I don't like having to scan the QR code to look at the menu, especially if you have a bad cellphone reception.Maybe they should offer WiFi (maybe they do. I didn't ask). The server did offer paper menus but were only able to provide 2 forthe table of 8. It took us about 30 minutes until we all had ordered our food. The drinks were brought out pretty fast, but Ithink the food took about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes after we had ordered it. After we finished eating, the plateswere cleared, and we declined the desert. We would have expected that they bring out the check/bill like they normally do in arestaurant in the U.S., but after a while I had to ask for it. Even then it took about 20 minutes to come out (at that time theyreally weren't that busy anymore) They also had already added the tip to the bill, and I'm glad the waiter pointed it out. Iknow this is common at other restaurants as well for larger groups. Overall rating: Ambience 4/5 stars, for making the outdoorseating on a busy street look like a beer garden. Indoors was nice too. Nice decoration, not too much/too little, etc. However,I would have expected some German music. I didn't pay tharuchbattention to it at first, but later noticed that they were playingsome spanish music. Beer quality and selection 5/5 stars Food 2/5 stars I had Sauerbraten wit Read more
