Secretos is a Puerto Rican restaurant conveniently located near downtown. Since I wanted to try something different, I had a... taste for some Caribbean food. The location is walking distance from my job, so I was able to place an order online then pick upthe order once it?s ready. Most of the dishes here are delicious. The only thing I have a problem with is how they fry theirMaduro (plantains). Every time I order the Maduro they cook them black. Fried Maduro is not supposed to be black. They tastelike they?re cooked in reused grease. I even asked to have the plantains cooked in fresh grease but they were still cooked blackon more than 1 occasion. As a foodie who travels, my experience eating food on the island was completely different. The wholemeal including the plantains were cooked in fresh oil and served exceptionally. Here it?s a different experience. Before I gota make your own bowl with pollo (chicken) rice and peas, and fried plantains. The plantains were dark. This time I ordered the 3tacos special with 1 side. When it comes to tacos, rice should be optional. It was not an option for the special. Madurai (friedplantains), tostones(twice fried plantains ) yuca frites (fries) and salad were the only options on the menu for the special. Ididn?t want to order plantains from here again because they would not be cooked to a golden brown, but that?s normally my secondoption with island food. The tacos were good but the plantains could?ve been cooked with more care and new cooking oil. Hereare photos below. I suggest that management has a discussion and retrains their team on how often to change the oil beforefrying certain foods. You can see and taste the difference between food cooked with old grease and newly changed vegetable oil. Read more

The food is definitely incredible. I used to come here a lot about a year ago, but I've been trying to try as many new places as... possible, which is why I haven't been back in a while. I've been craving their food recently, and since they close at 7 pm, itwas a good day to order. I tried their rellenos de papas, pastelitos/empanadas, BYO small bowl with maduros, pollo guisado, rice, and peas, as well as the tres leches. The best food on the menu is the steak I had a while back. It's seriously some ofthe best steak in the city. And the price is great as well. Compared to that steak, even the more expensive steakhouses can beput to shame. Still, I want to try other items on their menu as well. The BYO small bowl is a pretty great deal. The portionisn't really small; it's enough for a solid meal. The price is right, too. The plantains are sooo good! Probably the best, anddefinitely one of the best, plantain dishes I've had. The rice and peas is pretty good, but somewhat standard. Pollo guisado isalso tasty, and the chicken has a nice texture. There are quite a bit of potatoes. Although the food was very good, I'm stillwishing I got the steak again. The empanada was also quite tasty. It's larger than at most places and quite crispy. There's abeef and chicken option, and I chose chicken. It was still moist and flavorful on the inside. Overall, very solid. The papasrellenos (first time trying them) were also quite good. There's not that much meat, but the potato outside is flavorful andquite creamy. I especially like the outer shell. Their tres leches is delicious. You can tell it's homemade. There's a generousdusting of cinnamon on top as well. The cake is light, while also being creamy, sweet, and all around authentic as well asdelicious. I couldn't make it in person today, so I ordered online. I will say, it's definitely a lot better to order pickupdirectly. That way, the prices are decreased significantly (it's almost $7/empanada or papa relleno on Ub Read more

This review was difficult for me because there were a lot of factors I wasn?t expecting that ended up effecting it. First of all... I want to say the staff was super nice and friendly and I had a nice time eating here. I ordered the pulled pork based onrecommendation from the guy taking my order. The pictured food is the chimichurri steak with rice and beans, which my brotherordered. What I didn?t like so much about my experience was the amount I paid for the quality and quantity of food I received. Ithink the food was good, but not great and a bit too salty (and I rarely say this because I love salt lol). The other threepeople I was with agreed; it was simply over-seasoned. As for the price, I ordered the build-your-own dish for both me and mygirlfriend and then decided to go back to get us two side salads. The side salads were in a very small container and I ended uppaying $12 dollars for a little bit of lettuce and a couple slices of tomato. I paid a total of $45 for the two of us and thatdidn?t even include a drink (we were very thirsty after eating the salty food). I understand the prices of food are rising, andI have no problem paying if the food I receive is worth it, but unfortunately in my honest opinion the food I received did notmatch the price that I paid. I saw the reviews and pictures online before coming, and was excited to get my fix of Latin food, but I don?t feel as if though this place lived up to the ratings that it currently has. I unfortunately need to be honest in myassessment, so for now I?m going to have to go with three stars. This was a difficult review but our hungry party of fourreached a mutual consensus and landed on this. Maybe I?ll return and give this place another try in the future. I will say thatif you?re in the area, and you?re craving Latin food, this is still a worthy restaurant to fulfill those needs, just don?texpect to be blown away for the price. Read more
