Warm, welcoming diner with stick-to-your-ribs home cooking. There are tables outdoors, a patio in the back, booths and a... counter. My favorite is the counter, which is very communal. The patrons talk to each other, pass the condiments to one anotherand generally make everyone feel welcome. If the proprietor Judy "the beauty" Forman is there, she energizes the room with herwarmth and humor and makes you feel at home. Breakfast items are excellent. Love the herbed potatoes. I also like that they havevegetarian biscuits and gravy. The biscuits are made on premise and are huge and fluffy. If you're not in the mood for gravy,they are divine with the house made jam. They also make their own coffee cake. I also like that they offer different choices onthe breakfast menu, such as sauteed veggies or rice so that you can mix it up. this is such a neat place. Judy, the owner, was there greeting and seating everyone who came to visit! We enjoyed a DELICIOUS... breakfast! So no one has the guts to say it? Ambience is important while eating whether it's outdoor or indoor. Indoor seating is... historical, nostalgic, and leads to great conversation. Outside with natural trees and in South Park, speaks for itself. Theproblem is rickety poker folding tables, covered with stale smelling vinyl covers from somebody's closet and a mish-mosh ofchairs that I'm sure were donated or picked up from "Free off the curb." Condiment jars are obviously not cleaned nor sanitizedbetween diners and this alone makes one wonder about what is happening in the kitchen. It's quite easy to make the outside moreinviting to the eyes and stomach. Big Kitchen-level up! And because I've been eating here for decades, I know the quality,flavor and portion of food the Big Kitchen can deliver. I arrived on a Saturday at 12 and had immediate seatng. Note that if youcome in the morning it is likely up to 15 minutes to be seated but it could be up to 30 minutes before you get your plate. Oryour food may come to the table lukewarm. I ordered my staple, pancake and egg whites. Best egg whites comparable to manyrestaurants. The reason the pancake is a highlight is because it is large but light and fluffy. The only pancake I've eaten thatis NOT heavy on the stomach. Yet, the most tasteless syrup. So I bring my own. And I enjoy every bite. Service is what isexpected. I do appreciate that the servers each have an interesting story or hobby if you just ask. Cash is still preferred. Andcredit cards are now accepted if the machine works. Or if internet is working. Yeah bring cash people. The variety of mealcreations is creative and appreciated. Although I stick to my staple dish. If you're a local, Big Kitchen is in the heart spaceand you enjoy coming here. Popped in here for breakfast this morning before work, it gets busy but the staff does a great job. The owner is an absolute... delight and they have live jazz on Saturday morning.
