Everyone and their grandma complains how expensive San Francisco is. No wonder the hippies have disappeared to East Bay and... beyond. Ask yourself this - unlike New Yawk - where you can get a decent meal for under 5 bucks - when was the last time youate something delicious, filling and affordable for even under 10 bucks? Well, ask no more. Mae Krua is part of an experimentin Bernal Heights. Take an industrial kitchen, invite a bunch of chefs (no wait staff or sous chefs or helpers), and give them acanvas to unleash their creativity, and voila, you have Mae Krua. You also have Jamaican and pickle/sandwich chefs in the sameshop. The space is tiny. 3 or 4 tables shared amongst the 3 kitchens. So go during non-rush hours, or like 80% of the traffic, pick up and eat in front of your favorite Netflix show. Mae Krua is authentic. The chef is from southern Thailand and knows howto multi-task and whip up any of the 10 dishes on the menu, to the spice level you desire. Tip: Go for medium, it's a happyplace for those who like it less spicy and those who like it spicy. Ask for hot sauce and the delicious lemongrass fish sauce toamp up the spice. What stands out is the pumpkin curry. The flavors bring Bangkok or Phuket or Pattaya street food to yourpalette. While your mouth burns pleasantly, sip some fresh coconut, and save the pulp for dessert. Then there's rice balls. Wegot 2, get 1 instead. It's a large, fried, doughy, ball of goodness that goes well with the lemongrass fish sauce. Beprepared to wait, as a lone chef can sometimes be besieged by orders. This is not fast food, but slow food cooked with love.Although the chef is gracious and will bring your food to your table, if you can land one. We tried the spring rolls with tofu, and they were decent, not the stars. Everything pales in comparison to the pumpkin curry. Next time, we want to compare with thechef's Penang and green curries, which I bet have great flavors. If you are feeling soupy, you may w Read more
