Seriously folks, if this place is so great, with great quality items, why is lacking people frequenting the establishment? A... lukewarm atmosphere, when we arrived at 10:10 AM, there was a waffle plate being served with strawberries and whip cream, andlooked a little tempting to us, the newcomers and first time buyers, truly sold before even setting foot on this so calledFrench inspired ? bakery. Those glowing 5 Star reviews will do it each time, with that kind of feedback dazzling with praises,half the battle is won. So again with my question: if this bakery is a 5 , and 5 stars is the highest rating, does this meanthat the best of the best bakeries in France are also 5 Stars? Or this excellent number of reviews only apply to the uneventfulstrip mall in which this Gourmet Cafe & Bakery is located. Does it compete with all bakeries in Orange County? Where doescompetition end, really? The very few pastries on display were all baked dark, and came to discover that the dough used, whichhad its merits, but certainly no work of art, was used in different forms. The hugely popular Almond Croissants were almostgone at the time we walked in, so we bought the last 3. Price around $3.30? each. Next with the same type dough, some variationof an Apple filling, which turned out to be with a filling of apple sauce, either the baby Gerber type, or the one that comesin a big can. Horrific choice for such praised bakery. Dry, flaky, flat but somewhat buttery. Next, a Baguette that had a crustof extreme resilience, weak dental or denture, be cautious. This is the skills of a French baker, this hard to chew, basicallytasteless bread ? Prices in general are expensive, so happy we only blew about $26+, thanks to our propensity to believe a groupof reviews, that frankly, were far fetched. This is an unpretentious cafe located in a strip mall in the charming town of San Juan Capistrano. We have had many good... breakfasts and lunches here and have never been disappointed. The owners/chefs are hard working and create croissants thatrival those we have eaten in France. The French Onion soup is tops and we have enjoyed the panini sandwiches and the widevariety of breakfast offerings.
