This place is overall food quality is ok. Not the best, not the worst. I would say the skewers are pretty good in general.... Seafood is not very impressive. Do not order the assorted sashimi. 4 out of 5 types of sashimi is not very tasty. I think theoverall it is not a great value for the price you are paying here. Read more
Rantei is above average sushi restaurant with moderate price. The interior was nice and they have these private rooms for bigger... parties - shoes off when you enter. We tried a variety of top picks. The fish taco was absolutely delicious albeit a teeny bitmessy. Ju-Ni and Handroll Project really skewed our expectations for monkfish liver… sorry Rantei! The whole squid wasdelicious without the sauce. The sashimi selection was good and came with fresh wasabi (think chopped roots). The kaisen dononly has a sliver of uni but overall very filling. Presentation is definitely a selling point here at Rantei but not at the costof quality or flavor. This restaurant is kinda tucked away but definitely worth coming out for. Read more
Outstanding Japanese cuisine! Located in the Franklin Mall in Santa Clara, replacing Hatcho Restaurant. Outstanding... presentation, highly quality seafood and great selection of choices! Be sure to try their Kaisen Don: fresh crab, ikura,scallops, uni, and blue fin tuna over sushi rice. I also recommend the Sushi Omakase: chef’s selection of choice cuts offish over sushi rice. An above average Japanese restaurant with a variety of low budget omakase choices. Foods are well presented when they are served... to spice up your appetite. This location is very popular and you can expect to wait 30min~1hr on any given day. However, they donot take reservation for group with less than 6 people. However, Rantei could really do a better job to respect their customers'time. When you arrive, they will ALWAYS give you a lowball estimate on your wait time. They told us to wait 20mins and we endedup waiting 1hr and 20mins. So did many other customers and you can visibly see their frustration. I absolutely hate waitingaround and wasting time just to eat. Sadly, waiting to eat isn't unique to Rantei but it is something that I wish all restaurantwould stop doing. Please adopt an online system so people can better use their time while they wait. Or take reservations forall party sizes. It is especially disrespectful to deceive your customers in order to make them wait around for no reason. Shameon you Rantei. Plus, on my last visit, all four of us had to make a trip to the restroom a few hours after our meal. I suspectit is from a bad fish. I am hesitant to revisit this restaurant in the future. Read more

I really wanted to like this place but it just wasn't there. When we showed up there the host was helping out a customer with a... to go order. Next to him was a sign that said "Place name here to be seated." I did that but then noticed people who came afterme got seated right away. So I told the host that we were here for a table of two which we were seated right away. Then weplaced our order: garlic edamame, gyoza, kaisen don, and Chef's sushi. The edamame came a couple of minutes after our order wasplaced and it was room temperature. It seemed like the dish was sitting in the back waiting for someone to order it. The gyozawas decent. Kaisen don was not worth the price. It was filled with crab meat, roe, uni, scallops, and fatty tuna with a bed ofrice. The fish were also decent. The Chef's sushi was also ok since the fish served is what you'd get anywhere else. Basicallythe meal was ok with no exotic fish or taste. Read more
