We passed through on a road trip and decided to give the Depot Grill a try. I was disappointed in the marinated portobello... sandwich thinking it was lacking flavor. My husband liked the toosday salad, but thought the dressing was a little too sweet. The manager did adjust our bill to compensate. Other reviews indicate that there are good selections so if we make it throughagain I would be willing to give them another try. Historic Staunton is a very nice place to visit. Read more
You'll hear individuals (including myself) use the terminology "hidden gem", well 'The Depot Grille' is without a doubt the... poster child for this phrase. If you're not a local or following directions on your navigation device of choice you'll likelydrive right by. However this place is worth putting in a little effort to find. On busy days I could see where parking couldbe a bit of a challenge, but again it'll be worth a bit of effort. On 02 Oct, 2022, we were traveling along the I-81/I-64corridor from Lexington, VA to Harrisonburg, VA and planned on stopping for dinner somewhere along the way, but we wanted tostop somewhere we'd not eaten previously. An online search led us to 'The Depot Grille' in Staunton, VA. We were slightlyskeptical upon arriving because they only seemed to have a couple customers, but I can now write that off to the weather (rain)and that we arrived a bit early for evening meals because there was a regular stream of customers arriving while we dined. Asthe name states, this restaurant is located in a former railroad depot, which has been converted into a great little restaurant. We were greeted by a couple friendly staff members upon entering the building and promptly seated at a table with a great viewof the railcars outside. I ordered the 'Chips & Queso' for a starter and the 'Fish & Chips' with an additional side of Coleslawfor the main part of the meal. The appetizer (starter) was OK. The chips were served warm, but the queso was bland, justmelted white cheese w/o much flavor at all. It was void of any peppers or spices that you'd expect to find in queso, imho. When I return, I'll seek another starter and skip the queso. Now the 'Fish & Chips' were a completely different experience. My buddy and I were traveling along on I-81 and started getting hungry. We were getting near Stanton Virginia and decided that's... where we would pull off and eat. My buddy looked for somewhere unusual and different to eat at. I have to say this is a littleoff the beaten path but if you follow your GPS you will get there successfully. It is extremely rustic and I wasn't sure if wehad made the correct decision in coming there. Once I tasted the food though, I knew that we had found a diamond in the rough. Ihad the crab bisque soup which was very good, but the star of the meal was the salad I ordered. It's listed as Toosday ChickenSalad - leaf lettuce, Granny Smith apples, candied pecans, feta cheese and mesquite grilled chicken with poppyseed dressing. Iwas amazed at how wonderful this salad was and I will be going out of my way every time I pass through Stanton VA to stop andget one of these salads. First time here on Sunday. We went with a couple friends of ours and everybody really enjoyed it! I think we found our new... place. Usually out of four someone doesn?t like one thing or another but that wasn?t the case. My BFs steak was cooked toperfection ! Oh and we had the fried brussel sprouts and fried mushrooms, all were so tasty! I had fish and chips and that alsowas very good. I feel like a broken record ! Lol. Check them out !
