Reviews for Picante in Berkeley, CA

Very overpriced "bland Berkeley chicken breast Mexican restaurant". They are still in lockdown mode because they are obviously... making more money than they were before with their normal dining room. Now you can sit outside in the cold and get servedslightly warm food for extremely high prices. Trust me you are way better off with a taco truck. The employees are very nice butprobably overworked and underpaid. Read more

While the restaurant is being updated, they have a system of kiosk ordering and delivery to a tent setup in a parking lot.... Skeptical at first, but it worked out great. Food was terrific. Everything was clean and comfortable. Read more

Got there before they closed and was informed they would not be serving us. Longtime customer from when they used to be open... inside, before they basically became a glorified food truck that apparently closes before their stated hours. Bummed I'll nolonger be a customer. Edit: I appreciate the response from the owner, Jim. I was pretty disappointed as we'd been lookingforward to eating at Picante again. Will have to give them another shot soon. Read more

Heard from many people that it is very good and this place is popular between locals however, unfortunately the food I received... was not the best quality and the service either most probably because they were renewing their restaurant. Read more

Iconic east bay establishment. I have been going here for 20+ years since I was a toddler. As a child me and my brother would... watch the woman making fresh tortillas and they would always give us small ones. Try the their verde enchiladas and theirMexican angel food cake. Read more

This is very good, high quality Mexican food. Curbside pickup has been so great. My only issues are that the corn tortillas seem... to go bad inside the foil wraps that they use for pickup orders. Also, unlike every other Mexican restaurant, they do not offerany sort of combination platters. You can have enchiladas, or tacos, but not both on one plate. These are really small issuesand honestly this place is the best. We keep going back again and again. Read more

I wanted to like the place even more because I enjoyed both the recommendations of friends who had eaten there for years and I... also especially appreciated the forthright responses that the owner provided to various reviews that he had received, especiallythe negative or poor reviews showed a classy, respectful, and open to learning and improving attitude that usually indicates agood business. So, first let me say that the food was all good, we had fish tacos, quesadillas, Carnitas, and of courseguacamole and chips. What was less than appealing was having to eat in a makeshift sheltered outdoor space sitting essentiallyon a parking lot with plastic tenting all around and above us. Several of the heaters weren't working so we shivered a bit butgot through it. Experience also included using a large amount of plastic and cardboard, much of which I doubt gets recycledsince it couldn't be cleaned easily. Basically it felt like eating from a food truck but these were certainly not food truckprices. I appreciate that there are many additional costs to having set up outside while they remodel and I empathize with theirdesire to remain open, continue serving their clientele, and yet the service was surly and not particularly helpful. You placeyour own order and then you go wait for it to be delivered to you. There is no other service. Yet they still give you anopportunity to pay a service charge upfront when you order your food. Of course I did since I am a custom to tipping servers butI did not at that time know that there would be no servers other than the person giving me my bags of food. I think it might beworth warning people in advance so they know what they're getting into when they are expecting a restaurant experience. Read more

This is not Mexican food. I don't know what this is. Edit: I ordered the camarones la diabla I believe is what I ordered. I... received over cooked shrimp and overcooked unseasoned unsalted and flavorless white rice. On the side was some sort of squashtype relish or Salad I could not tell. Not to mention for this terrible food one beer and one can of soda the total came out to$33 Read more
