Server was friendly, but we were frequently forgotten about and had to go get them, even though it was not busy at all when we... went. My husband had fish and fry, and I had grilled chicken sandwich. The grilled chicken was so incredibly dry that it washard to eat. Fish fry was also so dry it had to be doused in tartar sauce to eat it. With so many other great restaurantsaround, we likely won?t be coming back. Read more
I read other reviews of The Filling Station before going there --which mainly was to enjoy a music band playing in the outside... patio area. Regarding the meal I enjoyed: I'm a newspaper reporter (--a rock journalist for The Southern Illinoisan) and not afood critic. But I would advise anyone reading this to take with a grain of salt any poor reviews you might read elsewhere --mymeal and table service were 'very good.' I ordered a patty melt + fries (something easily compared with other restaurants) frommy server --who came over to greet me and take my order fairly quickly after I sat down at a picnic table in the patio. All Iwanted to drink was water, and it was delivered without delay --despite every table in the entire patio being filled. The pattymelt and fries were served in about 12-15 minutes. It was hot and appealing in the basket set in front of me. The taste? Verygood, and the fries were very good, too. It just goes to show, I give limited credence to negative reviews. I certainly don'tdisbelieve when a Yelp reviewer states that the service took too long or they didn't like the taste or appearance of their food--but in my case, I'm here to report that The Filling Station had good service (despite a 'full house' of customers) and verygood food. Service was horrible. Sat on the patio. Waitress came over greeted us, gave us silverware and menus. She never came back. After... waiting 15 minutes we finally went in and ordered 3 glasses of water from the bar. Went back to our table and finished our waterwithout a single person coming to take our order. First time here! And LAST... unfortunately. So very disappointed but not for the reasons you would expect. We were a party of 6... and sat outside on the patio. Took a bit for our server to get to us but he was super kind and personable. We ordered shortlyafter and it was definitely a bit lengthy at about 40 minutes to get our food, no problem... but... my order was completelybotched. Wrong burger and the server knew right away. He put in a replacement and I got the privilege of watching my party enjoytheir meals until my order came out 15 minutes later. Server was polite and apologetic and said he'll make sure that either it'staken off or there'd be a discount. Well, after wolfing my burger because 'awkward' to have my party watch me eat... bill cameand he said his manager took 25% off! I was impressed and thought that was a great gesture... well, I signed and tipped and wasabout to leave but the numbers just felt off... so I asked for the original receipt and turns out that for our mishap theyactually only took off 25% of the single burger that was messed up... so a whopping 3% discount. I mentioned to the server thatseems shady and I wasn't happy. Got an apology and that was it. So, thanks for a terrible experience and bad taste in my mouthfor your poor response to a major mishap. Ironically, the burgers were good, but if that's how you address your customersmistakes... yikes. Always a chill and entertaining time. Very little drama, and when there is, it's swiftly and professionally handled. It... typically makes for a show to go along with your drinks. Last time I was there, the same kid that got kicked out, came backabout 7 times. Each time, we watched as he non-chalantly and confidently swayed right back in through the gate and up to thebar. Security was laughing their rear-ends off just wondering what was up with this dude. He wasn't violent or aggressive, justreally dumb. Great stuff. Read more
I've been coming here for the better part of most of my life, but the newest wave of $2+ increases on almost all menu items... makes this as good of a deal as getting complimentary hair and bugs in your food at some National Park restaurant. So long fillmy station maybe I'll come back with a winning lottery ticket. Will say, they have good food, yummy, so if you're in town for alast meal before you pitch a tent outside of city hall, then boom filling station. Read more
