Absolutely delicious. If you’re looking for a unique experience in the Black Hills, this is the place to go. We tried the... seasonal soup (incredible fall goodness), beef tartare, lamb bolognese, and veal cheek. Everything was made to perfection withquality ingredients. We topped the night off with the butter cake after reading rave reviews, and holy cow, that was one of thebest desserts we’ve ever had. The sweet & salty flavors play perfectly with one another, and the textures of ooey gooey cake, popcorn ice cream, and caramel keep your taste buds dancing. Read more

Our favorite restaurant was Wine Cellar, but after eating at Skogen, this is the best that we've been to in the black... hills! This is fine dining at its best, but the atmosphere isn't pretentious and there's no need to dress fancy. The flavors ofeverything we ordered were outstanding, to include the popcorn ice cream! The waiter was fantastic and very educated on the menuitems. 5 stars well earned!! Read more

Gem of a place! The veal cheek was quite possibly the most tender moist piece of meat I have had in my life. Oh and the... Pineapple Sorbet was light but packed with Flavor!! This Chef and his team deserve a Michelin Star! My server Chris and hiscolleagues were also very attentive and kind! Thanks for all the deliciousness! Will definitely return. Read more

This small town restaurant has a big city menu with stellar execution. It was a charming and amazing experience we never... expected to find in Custer SD. The restaurant is modern and cozy. Our server was fantastic and educated with the menu. Weenjoyed 3 courses and each item we ate was delicious, cooked to perfection. Don’t sleep on the butter cake. We couldn’t havehad a better time at Skogen. Highly recommend if you’re in the area. Read more

We are moving to Custer from Austin, TX and our hang-up about the area was the food...until we found Skogen. We ordered multiple... dishes over the many days we visited, and each one lived up to our (high) expectations. The filet was cooked to order andtender, the salmon fell off your fork and was seasoned to taste, the lobster cavatelli was creamy and flavorful, the dessert didnot disappoint either time...all with reasonably sized portions. You should expect to make reservations at a place like this. You should also expect to have a longer dining experience and pay more than at a typical chain. That's part of the experienceand the quality of food will not disappoint you IF you are looking for something different from the other restaurants in thearea. We will be regulars here!! Also, if you enjoy Skogen, try their sister restaurant (Hjem AM) for breakfast. Read more

I was leaving my vacation at Yellowstone and stumbled on the restaurant. OMG, I am so happy to dine where the executive chef... table side shaves white/ brown truffles on any dish. This cozy restaurant was comfortable but upscale. Everything was in smallportion but fulling. Each plate was plated with such a delicate touch. It was such a romantic date. Read more

Bravo! What a symphony of flavors in our mouths -- layered with just the right amount of high notes and full resonating flavors!... Some of the best meals we've ever had. We found Skogen Kitchen on Yelp after touring Crazy Horse Monument. We were greeted bythe owner, Eliza, who was warm and very lovely. She was able to accommodate us quickly at their last table (reservations arehighly recommended as there is limited seating). The atmosphere was very clean, contemporary with attractive decor. We startedour meal with the salad and oysters. My husband had the duck and I had the pork shank. We were so impressed that we returnedthe following evening - enjoying their seasonal menu change. We started with the asparagus soup, and for the main course we hadrabbit and the filet. The featured main course items were outstanding, but the artistry of the accompanied vegetables and saucescreated flavors to unmatched perfection -- Joseph knows what he's doing. Wish we had room for dessert! Too bad we live in Ohio,as we would become regulars. The entire staff went above and beyond to cater to the patrons. There was a sense of community asyou recognized the regulars by the conversations with the staff. You could tell they all enjoyed working there by the constantsmiles on their faces. Bravo, Joseph and Eliza! Wishing you much more success! Read more

Stumbled upon online by complete accident and knew I had to visit when in Custer. We were able to get a reservation somewhat... easily the day before in March, but I would imagine it could be a different story in the busy season. The completely unassumingexterior is somewhat responded to by the cozy yet convivial atmosphere inside. We were greeted immediately by a bright andfriendly hostess who, along with our wonderful waiter, provided exceptional service throughout the experience. The food isabsolutely amazing, and is likely the best in the state of South Dakota. There is a really unique blend of Scandinavian, French, and (I think) local influences which was both invigorating and divine. It’s been about two weeks since I ate here and I cannotstop thinking about it, a hallmark of a superb restaurant for me. I cannot wait to return! I hope they consider offering atasting menu as I wished I could have tried more! Read more
