Delicious food! The prices were great for a college student budget and the rolls were well put together and quality. I wish... their menu was more extensive and had drinks on it. Read more

I’m honestly so bummed to have to leave this review, but Zen Toro has in one way or another betrayed my trust. I have eaten... ramen there before and had been informed that they had a broth option that didn’t have msg. Since I didn’t get migrainesafterward I assumed that they told me the truth, and perhaps they did. But restaurants often change and it’s been a long timesince I visited and forgot which broth was msg-free. So I called in advance to check and while I very much appreciate (andexpect) their honesty, I was super bummed to learn that they no longer have any options without msg (or perhaps they never didand the msg before wasn’t enough to trigger a migraine). There’s no way of knowing but in any case, they have betrayed mytrust as a customer. I held them up for a long time as one of my VERY FEW Davis restaurants that I would recommend to friends, but I can’t support a business that doesn’t respect their own product or their the health of their customers. I tried everyother ramen shop in town and all use msg and I really thought at least Zen Toro would be different. I just checked other reviewsand it looks like they in fact changed ownership recently and the restaurant has really gone south. It so sad when a familybuilds a legacy of quality only to have it destroyed by people who only care about profit and liquidate the asset for short termgain. The old Zen Toro did serve msg, which I didn’t like or respect but they still had clear options without and other greatdishes and great service. Now there isn’t even an option for msg-free ramen in Davis which is super lame. Sad to see you sellout Zen Toro. You’re better than that. Or at least you used to be. ???? Read more

I went here with one of my dearest friends, maybe 2 other tables seated at the time. We were first served partially filled... glasses of straight out of the hose tap water with mostly melted bits of ice. I asked for an iced tea. It was projected to be106 that day, no, I would not like hot tea instead. The server proceeded to suggest they could bring an iced, hot tea.....oksure. 10 minutes later a different server arrived with a steaming mug of tea, I declined and opted for a Sprite. Right, not agood start, but sushi was pretty good taste wise. Unfortunately sitting at the bar I witnessed them in action includingrepeatedly setting their knives down on a painfully obvious dirty surface on top of the chiller that was covered in dust andbits of whatever that had accumulated in the years since it had last been wiped down. My bowels were not happy the next morning. Read more

Beautifully made and delicious Tonkatsu Curry Plate leaves an impression that would lead us to a second visit. The tonkatsu is... crispy out and tender in. Curry has a rich taste. Full of various spice and flavors. The plate is decorated with fresh saladthat blends well with the curry taste. Was a great experience for a reasonable price. Read more

This place was honestly the best sushi we've ever had. Both my wife and I loved the quality of the food. The rolls don't fall... apart, they're wrapped neatly and tightly and have a bounce to them. In the words of my wife, "this food slaps". We ended upgetting the baked crab and shrimp with mozzarella, unagi nigiri, rainbow roll and the deep fried zen toro roll. All of it wasamazing and it was our first time having unagi. It was absolutely delicious and would highly recommend if you want to trysomething new. The zen toro roll was actually my wife's and I favorite sushi roll we've ever had. It seemed they were reallyunderstaffed so it took a while to get the food but we didn't care. It's understandable with everything going on, yet the staffwere extremely hard working and didn't skimp out on quality. In our opinion they're also extremely affordable and is our new goto place for good sushi. Read more
