Reviews for Tropicana Bakery & Cuban Cafe in Downey, CA
Been here a few times and there is always something wrong with our order but the staff is generally good. Today I ordered a Cafe... Cubano (espresso) along with a Piña colada smoothie, and the dish Ropa vieja with congri and sweet plantains. However I gotwhite rice with a side of black beans and fried yuca in a garlic sauce. Not what I asked for but they were quite busy so I wentwith it. My wife ordered a steak sandwich but instead received a shredded beef sandwich (Vaca frita) which the server caughtand later corrected which was a first. I didn't ask for my order to be corrected because I figured I'd try something new. Fordesert we ordered the guava cheese pastry to go. It's always a delicious experience but maybe you won't get exactly what youasked for... But as long as your open to trying new things, is that really a bad thing? I'll let you decide. Read more
Wow, my first Cuban restaurant experience! What a treat, excellent service w a smile. We tried Ox tail which is a delicious meal... w a tasty broth & a tasty pork dish w onions similar to Carnitas. The coffee shots were also tasty, no sugar needed as you get acomplimentary slice of sweet bread. Both plates came w black beans & rice, then a side of plantains (fried banana). We also tooksome pastries home from their wonderful bakery because, well it is so FRESH & delicious. Read more

Tropicana is something special. The empanadas are delicious. The spicy chicken empanadas are crisp and well seasoned. The beef... empanadas are served warm with a flaky crust. They also have a wonderful selection of cakes and pastries. The dine menu isalso great. The turkey club is made on fresh baked cubano bread with a special kick of roasted peppers added to the classicsandwich. Read more
Tropicana is one of the bakeries in LA that I miss dearly. Others have complained about long lines, and yes, it can be very busy... at peak hours but their pastelitos de queso con guayaba are the best! I always enjoy my café con leche and pastries from here.I don?t mind waiting, it?s part of the experience. Read more
Do you love some good Cuban food? Come give them a try. I wish we had stayed to try some of their food but we bought our... pastries and dessert to go. Awesome variety, Everything looks fresh, there?s a line but everyone seems to be working hard tokeep it moving quickly. My server was Cuban and super nice. I didn?t like the fact that the pastries were more expensive thanthat other Cuban place, I probably got half the bread for the same amount of money but everything was very good. Read more
