The bakeshop is a wonderful place?to be, to shop, to browse, and I suspect to work. Both the Cook (Sam) and the Carpenter (Jo)... have created a destination shop in Highland Park. The breads are crispy outside, soft inside?all of them. Yes, I?ve tried themall. Puff pastries are available in both sweet and savory. Cider donuts, brownies, blondies, mini loaf cakes, danishes, croissant, cookies, crustless quiches, and smoochie pies are just SOME of the treats you?ll find here. In a word, delicious. Read more

I don't normally write a lot of reviews, but this place deserves to be mentioned with the highest of praises. The Cook and the... Carpenter brought us pure joy in the pandemic and I adore both Sam, the Cook, and Jo, the Carpenter. They are both kind,hard-working people that truly care about the community in Highland Park. Everything we have ever bought here has been perfect.Turnovers, pies, quiches, croissants, biscuits, king cakes, rolls, donuts, cupcakes, bread, loaves sticky buns -- I used toorder so much we would spend the whole week just toasting up baked goods from the fridge and enjoying them with coffee or tea.The crust is absolutely delicious on all the pies, quiches, and tarts, always, buttery, flaky, and decadent. The fruit is alwaysfresh in any turnover or pie, and any sweetness in any of their desserts are always well balanced so it's never overwhelming. Ialso love the savory croissants -- the flavors are always amazing, my favorites being the ones with ham or mushroom. Eating onefor lunch every day when working remote was something I always looked forward to. They send a weekly newsletter and getting toknow them through their emails and our weekly interactions has been a small ray of light during the pandemic. They are honestlythe sweetest people ever. We haven't had the chance to go as often as before due to work picking up for both my partner and I,but I miss seeing the friendly smile of Jo every weekend and grabbing a giant paper bag of wonderful treats. They deserve everybit of success coming their way. Read more

They may only be open for six hours a week, and for online order pick-up only (at least at the time of this review), but this is... the best bakeshop, hands down, and worth every second that it takes to pre-order and pick up its goods! Love that they send aweekly newsletter; it?s a wonderful little read every Monday evening it hits my inbox. Come the fall, their Apple Cider Donutsare my favorite in all of Jersey. The highlight of quaint, little Highland Park! Read more

Wow just wow! I'm sad I have only recently discovered The Cook and the Carpenter bake shop! First time I did not order in... advance and there was quite a line but worth the wait. If you don't order in advance you might not have a lot to choose from butthat's kinda the fun and adventure of it. I ordered a wheat rustic bread, butter biscuits, and gingerbread cookie dough (tobake at home). Let me tell you, not a single thing disappointed!!! I loved every bit of each item. I was especially superimpressed by the gingerbread cookie dough. It came out chewy in the middle and crisp around the edges - pure perfection! Whenyou approach the store the wait is outside so bundle up if it's cold or rainy. The ordering is really safe as it's done througha speaker system and payment is taken through a tap credit card or a small slot to insert money. Your order is placed into adrawer and then slide out to you so completely contactless. Love love love this place and I hope to continue to try new things! Read more

Yes, the bread is really that good. The brownies are a level of chocolate that I have only dreamed of and the menu is creative... and changing. I don't think I've had a single bad product. However, the company's customer service philosophy is questionable. Iget it, not everyone wants to chit chat- but surely a smile at checkout couldn't hurt. Yet, that's if you're lucky enough tocatch the bakery when it's open (and to our dismay they're usually not). They are closed Monday and Tuesday- which is greatbecause people can go on Saturday or Sunday- except!- early closing hours on Saturday and Sunday. I really hope they becomesuccessful enough to hire another sales person for expanded (normal) hours. Read more
