I know what you're thinking... West African Food? Hunan Cafe? Isn't Hunan a province of China? Shouldn't this be Chinese food?... You're right! I actually ate here before it became West African cuisine (new owners, I believe). It was a nice traditionalChinese restaurant but competition's tough. The new food is just as delicious though! This is my first time trying Africancuisine and I have to say, the food was intimidating but the lady in front was very nice and helped guide me on what toorder. As mentioned by another person, waiting time is around 30 minutes. Not quick but the food's home-made and fresh! Keepthat in mind if you're in a hurry! Now, time for you to learn from my mistakes. Portions fill you up! Unless you're sharing, stick with one dish, I ordered too much. I tried the Fufu with Egusi Soup and Yolofo Rice. Traditionally, Fufu is eaten byhand. Tear and dip. Ladies, if you got pretty nails, ask for utensils. Gentlemen, activate caveman mode. They give you a bowl ofwater for you to wash your hands in. The fufu and soup was very delicious! Savory and spicy. I couldn't finish the rice but Igot the mackerel and it was so crispy and soft when I got it! Very tasty! A very unique experience, thank you for letting metaste the culture of Africa. It was very delicious and fun. Come try if you're feeling adventurous. Read more

Ordered takeout for lunch today from here. It was superb. My meal consisted of a beef pie, gizdodo, and chicken jollof... rice. The beef pie was the best I've ever had. I've never had what I would call a top-notch beef pie. Hunan Cafe changed this. The filling wasn't dry, which is always an issue when I order beef pies. And the crust was so light and flaky. The gizdodo wasperfect. The veggies were yummy, the meat was cooked well, and the flavor was on point. It had just the right amount of heattoo, which is so important. The chicken jollof rice was spot on. The rice is light and has a wonderful flavor to it. It evenhas a hint of heat after the intial flavor subsides. The rice is some of the best I've ever had. The chicken was lightlyseasoned and drew most of its flavor from the meat itself. This is a nice change from so many restaurants heavily seasoning allthe proteins. And the plantains were lightly cooked. They had a lot of natural flavor that wasn't hidden. One of the best mealsI've had here in Houston. And when you consider the portion sizes are large, a good value too. Read more

First off FRESH. The first spot I’ve been to and it feels like home . And smells super good! The staff is nice ESPECIALLY... Queen ! I ordered Chicken Egusi w/ Fufu . And chicken jollof that came with plantains ! The best I’ve tasted .and AFFORDABLE!I traveled from Atascocita/Humble area … 48 minute drive to get this food due to the reviews. I use to go to a spot near wherethis is located but HUNAN is the best. This is my new spot . My food was still fresh when I got home and it was more thanenough. Excited for my leftovers for tomorrow ! Seasoned just right too . Makes me want to lessen my roots even more! Thank youfor the quality awesome food. I will be here once a week! Did I forget to mention how clean this place is!!! Can sit and eat too. Thank you soooo much . Waiting on hubby to get off to try African food for the first time which I know he would love!!! Love West African food? Great, come here! Never had West African food before? Also great, come give it a try and you will love... it! I've been here twice, and both times the food has been outstanding! They make everything fresh right there, so you mighthave to wait 30 minutes or so for your food--so you're not going to get a quick meal here--but the food is totally worth thatwait. I'm particularly fond of their yam porridge--if you like yams, you need to try that dish! Seating is comfortable, and theambiance of the restaurant is actually quite nice. All the staff are helpful, friendly, and professional; when I asked what acouple of the dishes were, they gave me a picture menu and explained some about each dish. I'm so glad I don't have to drivedown to South or Central Houston to get good West African food! Read more
