Reviews for Bluebird Diner in Iowa City, IA
I got the biscuits and gravy. The wife had a ham and cheese omelette. The biscuits were a little hard and in my years on this... earth I've never seen a brown breakfast gravy. The sausage was a little dry. But the server did pay special attention when Isaid, please burn my hash browns. So, service gets a 4/5. Atmosphere was a little dated, but the food a drink selection wasnice. Call me what you will, but I like a menu as vast as my many moods. But over all of we're being honest, not quite my cup oftea. I did a search for a breakfast place in Iowa City and saw this diner. It was one of a few places open at 7:00 A.M. on a Sunday.... Stopped in and was waited on right away by a young lady that was working hard taking care of many customers at once. I sat atthe counter and observed all the work and talk between cooks and servers. I ordered the steak and eggs. This was the firsttime I ever had steak with my breakfast. The order came out very fast and was amazing. I also am a tea drinker and usuallyhave trouble finding good tea especially at diners. Not only did they serve the tea in a very nice pot, you had choices of atleast 4 teas. I give this place 5 stars for: Great food Great service Great atmosphere Read more
I've seen the hype about this place for a few years now & finally got the chance to try it out. First the good, the portions are... huge! The menu has good variety with plenty of options, the service was friendly, & it definitely has an old school dineratmosphere. Now the bad, the food was just okay. The eggs tasted like the liquid eggs you pour out of a carton, the hashbrownswere mushy in the middle, & the chicken fried steak was just a frozen product out of a box that they heated up. Nothing tastedhomemade. My wife who is a fairly picky eater ordered her bacon crisp, it came out limp, her scrambled eggs were not fullycooked, & she hated the hashbrowns. She basically ate the toast. Plus the diner was a bit dingy & looked like it needed a gooddeep cleaning. Overall I thought it was a fair meal, it's nothing that I would make a priority to go back to but it's not aplace I would try to avoid either. Read more
The best Eggs Benedict in town! I love their eggs Florentine with the pecan bacon. The hash browns are cooked to perfection... every time, and the staff is always so friendly. As you can see I ate it up, almost forgot to take a picture ???? Read more
Great coffee and breakfast food. I tried the Eggs Benedict Florentine during my visit. The poached egg was a little overcooked... for both (the yolk should run out beautifully when cut through, not 30% runny 70% cooked), but overall it tastes good, especially the hollandaise sauce! Hash Browns were alright, could be crispier. The chilled coffee and the friendly staff wasdefinitely the highlight. Read more
Excellent food with outstanding service. I had the omelet with the smoked salmon & chive cream cheese. Sounds weird but it was... delicious! Daughter has the Eggs Benedict which were outstanding as well. A REAL Hollandaise sauce. Son had the waffles butthey were gone before I could ask for a taste. Service was quick for a busy Sunday morning. Prices are great for what your aregetting. Definitely on my radar if I?m looking for a meal in Iowa City. Read more
Bluebirds is one of those diners that like to put a new take on some traditional style meals. Ordered Biscuits & gravy. It was... okay. The biscuit(single) was on the small side but had good flavor. They added a small sausage patty on each side of thebiscuit, it to had a decent flavor. The gravy was perfect as well. Hashbrowns tasted good, & the egg was cooked perfectly. They had clean bathrooms. Had to pay for parking. Overall was an good experience. Read more
