We ate with a group. Good southern cooking. Back after a two year break. Still amazing! Back again in November and still... amazing. Don't shy away from the fried chicken livers if they are available! Read more

Classic meat and three. Very popular and it is cool because it's in the middle of a train yard. Service was good and kept the... whole place clean and tidy. Breaded chicken tenders were straight fire Read more

I haven't been to this restaurant I'm almost 20 years. As GREAT as I have always remembered! Fried green tomatoes is something... that this restaurant is known for and they're delicious!! (Yes, the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes," is roughly based on this wellestablished restaurant)Today, I had these, along with Mac and Cheese (Homemade, not the quick stuff) Fresh Collard Greens,Cornbread with Tea. My lunch partner had Country Fried Steak (they shared a piece with me and it was fantastic. I'm picky whenit comes to this..but it was yummy!) Homemade Creamed potatoes, FGT too, as well as Cornbread! A lot of food, so a to gocontainer was provided. We arrived fairly late, around 2:15 p.m., and they close at 2:30. I dislike going into a restaurantclose to closing time, as I've owned & worked in the business, and understand how servers feel about this, however, we werewarmly greeted and welcomed by all! ???????????????? Visit this nice restaurant, you will not be disappointed! Read more

Outstanding down-home, Southern food. Although the prices are a bit higher these days (aren't they all?), so worth it for the... quality & quantity. The fried catfish is wonderful, and all the veggies are cooked & seasoned to perfection! What are youwaiting for??? Read more

Southern fare served cafeteria style in a cafe with walls that display acclaimed visitors. Enjoy their veggie plate esp the... fried green tomatoes with remoulade. The meat selections included buttermilk baked chicken, liver n onions or fried catfish, toname a few. Cornbread was blah and coconut pie just pie... but other varieties deserve a try. Long wait today. Read more

Irondale, AL is a small town that looks frozen in time. Picturesque storefronts, sleepy residential areas, and a neighborly... charm that makes this a pocket of quasi-utopia despite being only 22 minutes from downtown Birmingham. There are two significantfeatures of Irondale, and the first is the Irondale Cafe. It has obviously been expanded from its popularity in the ?FriedGreen Tomatoes? film as The Whistle Stop. The original restaurant is still intact with an adjacent building retrofitted as anannex. The chalkboard menu can change depending on what?s available (or sold out). The hours are limited (as of my visit) andpeople stream in, but the line is kept moving both with serving food and cashing out. Food is served cafeteria style. You picka meat (or two) and whatever else you want individually to build your meal. Everything I ate was deeee-licious including?youknow?their fried green tomatoes. Their catfish and chicken livers were fabulous. Drinks are constantly refilled by a quick andwarmly kind server. The other feature is that if you?re a train lover like me, a gigantic Norfolk Southern rail yard and busymainline funnels through this town, with a parade of trains viewable from a wooden sheltered platform. I got both a Southernfood feast and a railroad feast in one trip. Well worth a visit. Read more
