Romano's Restaurant is truly a hidden gem in Julian, CA. It is quintessential old school Italian cooking that is set in a... historic, rustic home surrounded by a gorgeous mountain country backdrop. My friend and I stumbled upon this place while we werelooking for a "finer" dining option in the area during our glamping trip in a nearby town. We pulled up to the unassumingrestaurant, opened the door, and were immediately drawn in by the aromas of home-cooked Italian cuisine, the warm hospitality ofthe staff, and the overarching sense of homeliness. Read on for more. The Service - 5/5 The hostess and waitresses here werejust the best. They got to us as quickly as they could, made great recommendations, poured out the wine with heavy hands, andoverall made for a very inviting meal. The Ambiance - 5/5 This is where Romano's really shines. They've got the service down, the food takes you back to an Italian grandmother's cooking, and the ambiance sets the tone from the start of your diningexperience to the end. You feel like you're dining in a home, not a restaurant. The classic red-and-white checkered tables, slatted wood walls, brick overlays, and warm chandelier lighting all bring it together. You won't want to leave. The Food -5/5 There's many ways to judge an Italian restaurant. At some, you expect finely prepared dishes with high-end techniques andfinishes. At others, you want massive portions, deep, rich flavors, and a sense of nostalgia. Romano's provides the latter andif you look at it in that lens, it is the best around. What I Liked: Deluxe Pizza - 5/5 The pizza is loaded with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, olives, onions, and bell peppers. You would think it would be too heavy or sloppy to handle but it's toppedoff just right. The red sauce is delectable and the crust was crunchy but still chewy. Heavyweight Cabernet Sauvignon, Lodi,California - 4/5 A scrumptious full-bodied red, recommended by our wonderful server. Branciforti dei Bordonaro, Ner Read more

Absolutely, they get 5 solid stars. The food was amazingly prepared. Kudos to the chef. The server was sweet and a joy. KARINA,... you're awesome! Hubby had the pasta porticello, and I had the spiedini. The shrimp was well cooked, and the entire dish wasjust a balance of flavors. The pasta itself was a whole other level. The spiedini was home-cooking, in the best and mostpositive way. Reminiscent of a grandmother's cooking. Hubby and I were fully satisfied and 100% happy. Roman's is definitelygoing to be a regular stop for us in Julian. Read more

Great service. Walked in got greeted and sat within 5 min in a busy Sunday afternoon. While most places around closed at 3, this... one was open! We loved the Calamari appetizer, Spiedini Plate was so authentic, chicken parm was great too.But the HomemadeCheesecake with strawberry glaze was so delish. Hoping to come back! Read more

I feel like anyone who gives this place less than 5 stars is probably a bitter, negative human who hates life. My family and I... love this place. We've been coming here for years. It's not fancy or expensive and that makes it perfect for Julian. The staffis friendly, the food is amazing, and the prices are reasonable. I love the mussels and always get a couple of extra rolls todip into the incredible sauce. My kids love their pizza, and I always get the chicken piccata. Give it a try. This would be myfavorite Italian food spot anywhere, but the fact that it's in Julian makes it even better. Read more

The servers were extremely nice and were fast qith the service. The mussels were not prepared properly. The lasagna was large... but mostly cheese There was no meat and very little noodles. The cheese ravioli was good with the sauce. The owner kept comingover and asking us if everything was good. Usually this is a great experience but he kept doing it almost as if he knew the foodwas bad. I would not recommend this place. Read more
