Reviews for Golden Ox in Kansas City, MO

Prime rib was very tough. The manager kindly brought out another one. It was only slightly less tough. It had good flavor. For... the cost and lack of quality of the steak, we’ll have a tough time going back. To clarify, we raised our own beef for years. We both grew up on cattle farms in northwest Missouri. We both have fond memories of the Golden Ox of yesteryear. With ourexperience in the beef industry, we know you have to buy beef that’s finished with the intention of making good cuts of beeffor dining. However, we also know that many restaurants and grocery stores choose to buy old cows or bulls that have spent theirusefulness in a cow/calf operation. Those produce the lesser quality cuts of beef and are cheaper to buy. I hope the Golden Oxcan change their beef purchases, so they can pass along the expected quality for the price they charge. In comparison, we candine at a steakhouse in the small rural town of Albany, Mo, paying between $20-$28 for a prime rib dinner, including your choiceof salad and potato. They consistently serve high quality beef. To the owners/managers of Golden Ox: please accept thesereviews as constructive and use them to make improvements, rather than be defensive. These reviews are designed to help improveyour business. I’ve quantified my review with me personal experience in the beef industry. We’d love to try you again, asyou possess a Kansas City icon. We wanted to like this place so much more than we did. The ambiance and service was excellent. Our server Craig was above and... beyond. The crab appetizer was amazing, as was the “famous” baked potato. The shrimp cocktail was meh, the spinach was tastybut runny. And the steaks, both to be medium rare - my filet was tough and dry and my husbands ribeye was over cooked. Read more

Truly outstanding. I’ve been all over the world and this place is second to none. My wife loves red meat more than she loves... me, so obviously she’s happy, which makes me happy. I’ll definitely be back, but I’ll fast for 3 days to make room forthis amazing feast. Read more

Excellent service, excellent food, but comically overpriced. Steaks, one glass of wine and two beers cost me $263 for two... people. The steak was certainly delicious, but really, so many are. Nothing special here at all to justify the nose-bleed highprice. I could have had this same dinner with equal or better quality at any number of steak houses, like Roadhouse, Longhorneven Outback. Their dishes are expensive for a reason—because they are worth every penny spent. Delicious. I opted for the Manhattan steak... (14oz of sheer bliss) with grilled asparagus. Our waiter John was great, and the general manger, Joe, shared great history aboutthe stockyards beginnings and the fire that took it down. Every bite was savored and the ambiance takes you back to simplertimes when beef—it was always what was for dinner! Read more

It is a good restaurant, had to send my steak back for being undercooked, asked for medium, (not rare) not really impressed. I... don't think the flavor justifies the price. Sorry, I really wanted this trip to he better. 25 min. drive for an undercookedsteak, just not impressed. Read more

I made a reservation for my birthday and was seated immediately. My table of 3 ordered the oysters Rockefeller and calamari for... appetizers. I had the strip steak for dinner, which was cooked fine. The sides (lobster mac and creamed spinach) left a lot tobe desired. One main reason for this 3-star review is that the Golden Ox charges for steak sauce. Their house sauce is moreakin to a barbecue sauce, it was very sweet and didn’t go with the steak at all. They have no other options either. Overall, the meal wasn’t worth what we paid ($320). Was it the worst overpriced steakhouse I’ve been to? No. Would I consider goingagain? Probably not. Read more

This place is where the Kansas City Strip was created, and well worth coming here to experience it. My ribeye was excellent,... cooked perfectly and tasted great. Nice choice of cocktails as well. Decor is vintage and upscale. Highly recommended! Read more
