As a general rule of thumb is (and ANY decent restaurant knows this) : judge a restaurant by its bathrooms. If they can't keep... a bathroom neat and tidy, what happens with the food? When I used the bathroom (and the route down there is filthy and unkempt)I was greeted with a garbage bag over the urinal (nice touch) that had obviously been there for some time. The garbage wasoverflowing to the floor, the hand towel dispenser was empty but the roll was open on the counter getting wet. The bathroom wasdirty. All this when (apparently) one of the owners is sitting the whole time at a messy and disorganised table : (obviously herusual perch) en route to the bathrooms. When I brought the situation to her attention she wanted to argue with me about it. I'mnot going to eat a restaurant which shows so little regard for their customers. I grew up in KW. Can remember when theCheckerboard was downtown and remembered when they moved to Belmont. I had hoped it had some similarities to the way it once was. What a let down. Read more

The food was tasty and the staff were friendly, but the restaurant was overall quite dirty other than the tables/chairs (ex.... dirty floors and layers of dust on wall surfaces). My boyfriend and I usually wash our hands before eating, but when he went towash his hands first, he was so disgusted that he told me I was better off to not wash my hands than to go into the bathrooms.He said they smelled so bad and were so gross that he had to work his appetite back up. I'm so disappointed at the state of therestaurant because the food was great and a good price, and the other reviews on here were really the only reason we stayed forthe food to arrive. Read more

Before I had even entered the building, I was already receiving excellent service at Checkerboard. My server eagerly welcomed... me at the door and was incredibly friendly, getting me seated and making me feel very at home for my entire experience. Thediner's design made me feel like I was visiting family, and my server's attitude reinforced that. Server said goodbye to eachindividual person who left and welcomed each individual person in, knowing all regulars by name. Made great conversation thatmade for a warm atmosphere. Server was very confident about his cooking abilities which gave me high hopes for the food, andthose hopes were met easily. My pancakes were perfectly crisped on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the flavour was great.After eating, the server made it clear that I was welcome to stay for as long as I'd like and we chatted about the area. Evenmore, when I walked past the Checkerboard later in the day, I was met with recognition and the same friendly service.
