Holy mackerel ? we were traveling from out of town and were told we needed to try this place and yeah, we definitely did. We... came in for brunch and the service was stellar and the food was even better. Everything was delicious ? cocktails, coffee,appetizers and brunch fair clearly used fresh and local ingredients. Very good! Slightly humid in the restaurant..but the food was delicious! I got the cherry salad ( which I normally don't buy... salad ) but it was amazing! The chicken for an up charge of $3 was worth it, to add on! The cheese curds were really good! Justthe cheese shot out of some of them! Very cool place to visit! Check this local favorite out! If you don't live in Wisconsin or even if you do and want to taste Wisconsin this is your spot. The Old Fashioned is located in... scenic downtown Madison by the capital. The decor inside matches the awesomeness of the selections on the menu. I ordered thefish combo (perch, cod and walleye) because I absolutely love walleye but had never tried perch (again, I don't live in thenorthwoods region). I was glad I did because all of the fish and my sides (coleslaw, fries and bread) were delicious! Oh, thecheese curds are a scene stealer! They were even voted the best in Wisconsin by USA Today. The staff, was definitely friendly aswe arrived 20 min before closing. Do yourself a favor and try The Old Fashioned. I mean they even have a picture of Paul Bunyanon the wall, so you know its good. Came in for lunch, which meant you order at the bar, pay and they bring your food out to the table. The waitress did touch the... table a few times to make sure we were satisfied. Food was great. Cheese curds voted best for good reason. Burger, BLT, kidsmac n cheese and drinks we're all very delicious. Would return. Read more
First impression was not at all positive. The server took a long time to come to the table. So a host actually took our drinks... order when he realized that the server hadn't been to our table. Finally when the server came to our table she didn't apologizenor did she introduced herself. Cocktails were good. Food wasnt too impressive at all. The fondue was extremely bland inflavors. It was?mostly tasty. The cheese curds were to die for, of course. For dinner I got the fried chicken and I felt it could?ve been... more flavorful. Didn?t care for the baked beans at all. Everything was so good. Try the cheese curds. I know every restaurant in Wisconsin has them, but these are the best. And try the... old fashioned. The restaurant is literally named for them, and they did NOT disappoint. I got the chicken fried steak (I put thegravy on the side, but it normally comes on top), and loved it. I'd love to come back! Given the name of the restaurant and my affinity for a good Old Fashion, I needed to try this place. The service was amazing,... top notch since I?ve arrived in Madison. I think her name was Amelia. Undecided what I should try the server was detailed andhelped to narrow down my choices by sharing her favorites. I have never heard of walleye fish, so I decided when in Rome to trysomething new. I paired the fish next to cheese curds because that seems to be a must in Wisconsin. The fish was flaky, moist,and flavorful with a squeeze of lemon and dash of salt. The cheese curds were amazing, something I don?t get in California so itwas worth the try. The old fashion was different with brandy. It was not bad at all and enjoyable with my meal.
