I was visiting California and had never heard of The Hat. My friend asked if I liked pastrami, I said absolutely and he said... we're going to The Hat. The location I went to has a real nostalgic feel, the business has been around for 70 years, the foodwas reasonably priced and an excellent value. If you like pastrami, this is a restaurant you need to go to. Read more

Oh my this place was off the hook! Not much parking but people come in and out pretty quick so it?s worth waiting to find a... spot. I?m not a pastrami fan so I got the roast beef dip while my hubby got the pastrami. We ordered a side of chili cheesefries. The fries are ENORMOUS! Big enough to share with 4 people so I?m glad we only had 1 order. Small inside eating. 2 toptables and 4 top tables. Restroom available for customers. Definitely will try closer locations but we just happened to be nearthis one! Enjoy ???? Read more

It?s nearing midnight and I?m heading west on the 60 when my gas light flicks on. I still have a ways to go till I?m home so I... take the next exit; Atlantic Boulevard. As I sit at the stoplight to turn into the shell station, the neon signs of ?The Hat?catch my eyes. World Famous Pastrami. I see through the perfectly transparent front windows a scene that reminds me of a EdwardHopper painting. A few patrons sit beneath fluorescent white lights as a crew of cooks bustle behind the counter to make what Iassume to be the pastrami in question. My stomach rumbles, and I follow its hungry will. I park, and walk into a place thatseems not to have changed for a handful of decades. I choose the most obvious menu options: Pastrami, small fries, medium Coke.I get a paper number and sit and a two-person booth of cracked faux-leather from the 1980s. I watch as the cashier slides orderafter order attached by a binder clip down a clothes-line, which spans the kitchen. And I watch as the cooks respond with both arobotic efficiency, yet human enthusiasm. Five minutes later, I am handed two paper bags that seem too heavy for what Iordered. And indeed when I open them, I find that the small fries occupy half of the bag and weigh enough to have their owngravitational pull. I sample a few and they taste?like fries. I unwrap the pastrami sandwich and gaze upon more pastrami than Ihave had in the last few years, falling out of a standard hoagie. It?s enough food for a small family, yet here I sit alone, preparing for battle. It?s delicious. Between bites I contemplate life, looking out through those simple, charming windows atthe light night traffic that zips by on a rare, mirror-like, rain covered highway. Though I was full five or so bites ago, Istill have half a sandwich and a pound of fries to go. But I?m here for it, loving every second. The charm one feels with avisit to The Hat is quintessentially old-American, and in its transparent simplicity, one finds easy peace. Read more

The Hat is LA staple and one of the best places for anything chili cheese. The burgers and fries are both great. The star of the... show is definitely the pastrami chili cheese fries. They are served with a good amount of pastrami and the serving size is huge. They are definitely enough to share between 2-4 people. The employees were all awesome. The only thing is when they are callingyour number for pick-up inside the dining room they don't say it loud enough and it is hard to hear. Besides that it's a greatplace to eat and hangout. Was a little busy but was able to find a table. Available tables are a little messy from previous customers. The employees were... just trying to get their job done as it was on the busier side. Read more

This place has become a go to spot everytime I come home to visit now. Their chili cheese pastrami fries are just to freaking... good to pass up. The pastrami burger is also yummy but if you had to try just one item it's the pastrami fries. Read more

It wascrowded on a Sunday at 2 pm...but the order line moved quickly. And the server at the pickup window was friendly. Call ahead toavoid the line. Read more
