This is the second time we tried to go to Bella?s Cafe in the Westville area of New Haven, and both times we had to find an... alternate restaurant due to a 2+ hour wait! So, as a replacement for Bella?s, we drove across town to try Pantry which is in theEast Rock section of New Haven. The wait was only 15 minutes so that was a positive. The restaurant is small with tables closeto one another, and there are maybe 5 tables outside seating two people each. The menu is a typical brunch menu with your eggs, omelettes, pancakes and French toast. The food quality across the board was a 4 which in this day and age is pretty good. Theslow service was a 2 which is hard to understand given how small the restaurant is. What stood out were the pancakes and thehash browns, both excellent. There were 4 adults in our party and included one 10-12 ounce orange juice ($4.50!), three ordersof pancakes (2 cinnamon swirl and one blueberry/chocolate chip), three orders of scrambled eggs, one with lox, and an egg whiteomelette. Unfortunately the waitress forgot the hash browns for the omelette so I had to sneak some from the other orders.Inever mentioned the hash browns to the waitress because the order took a long time to arrive and didn?t feel like waitinglonger. I am estimating a 45-50 minute wait for the food which is excessive. Overall the food is good quality and the total billwas $68 without tip. At $17 per person? pricing is probably about average compared to other places. The killer was the long waitfor the food once ordered. Read more

summary: extremely inattentive service, good vibes, just ok diner food with several really delicious items i am a local and... i've been coming here for three years now. i know that this is an institution and that many in east rock swear by this place.but my verdict on the pantry is overall negative, mainly due to the consistently low quality of service but also a few petpeeves. let's started with what the pantry does well. the cinnamon roll pancakes are absolutely delicious--they are my favoriteitem on the menu. the home fries are perfectly crisped and garnished. the benedicts and omelettes are generally pretty highquality. it's also an objectively very cute place, well-decorated with jazz posters. whoever runs this place has excellent tastein jazz that is tastefully played in the background. but the service here is nowhere short of neglectful. since i live nearby iknow not to come here when it's busy and likely to be understaffed, but it seems to just not matter. (most) of the wait staffhere are polite and friendly enough, but they almost always fail to check up on you after they bring your food. when they doremember to ask how you're doing and you request water or coffee refills, they /might/ come back with them ten minutes later, ifat all. lack of water refills is bad enough at any restaurant, but coffee refills are especially important since a big part ofwhat makes a diner a real diner is bottomless coffee. last time (this morning) our server passed by our table multiple times, coffee pitcher in hand, without taking note of our never-refilled mugs. only after we received our check did we ask for morecoffee, which we finally got along with a whiff of attitude. a couple refills during your meal should be completely normal, butgood luck just getting one here--and again, this is true regardless of whether the place is packed or mostly empty! worse, theplace is cash only, and the prices have increased substantially over the past few months, which i wou Read more

Awesome breakfast joint for cheap eats and diner feels. The cinnamon pancake is HUGE, tastes great, is roughly 3.75. If you... have an appetite and want a great breakfast deal, I recommend getting the pick two eggs (6.75) that comes with home fries andtoast and then also pick your choice of pancake. The business is cash only so prepare accordingly !! Read more
