I was so glad to see Indian food getting some love from the Michelin guide and getting a star this year! I had to try it while... visiting NYC (I'm a huge lover of Indian food). They have a really unique and innovative menu with elevated ingredients thatstill touch on the traditional flavors. There's so many good-looking options, you'll have a tough time deciding, but my serverwas super cool and helpful. The gunpowder dosa had great flavors, a nice crisp, and very smooth potato filling. From somebodywith a pretty high spice tolerance, there was a medium/hot level of heat on that plate. The lobster tail curry was very rich andcreamy. I'd give the flavors of the curry an 8/10. The lobster itself was pretty plain and needed the curry around it. Thecoconut rice had a subtle flavor but was the perfect accompaniment to the dish. They have a nice vibe that's classy but casual.Service was fast and well-timed. While Semma wasn't a show stopper, it was still a very good, 5 star spot I'd go back to! Read more

We went after I was lucky enough to snag a reservation cancellation. After all the hullabaloo I wanted to try it for... myself. Definitely upscale Indian food, authentic flavors, well prepared and quality ingredients. Pleasant room, busy andbuzzing with energy. Good service. We wanted to try everything! The gunpowder dosa was good but I have to say, nothing unusualor better than what I?ve had overseas. The tiger prawns were packed with flavor. The venison was perfectly cooked and verytasty. My only issue is the prices are kind of high for what you get. But I?ll probably give it another try. We were so full wecouldn?t have dessert. Cocktails were tasty. Read more

Just had an incredible meal at Semma. I got stressed because the subway was delayed and we were going to miss the 15-minute... grace period for our reservation. I left a message but also was so concerned about losing the reservation, I made my poorhusband run ahead from the subway to the restaurant. The hostess was very sweet and let us know we still had the table. Even ifit wasn?t necessary to run for it - Semma?s food is worth running for. Every dish we ordered had such developed, complexflavors. The staff also comped 3 (!!) additional dishes from what we ordered while we were there. The service was impeccable andthe staff do not miss a beat. Do not skip the gunpowder dosa, snails, or sea bass. Bottom line, Semma is more than deserving ofthe Michelin star they were recently awarded. I may have a food baby all week but I am already plotting my next visit. Thankyou, Semma, for an incredible experience both through your food and above-and-beyond service! Read more

Best South Indian food I?ve had. Definitely need good spice tolerance but the dishes were all delicious. Favorite was the banana... leaf wrapped sea bass, the coconut sauce was perfectly balanced with the level of spice and the fish was so buttery and flaky. The tamarind lemonade was delish - not too sour or sweet. Semma is an excellent South Indian restaurant on Greenwich Ave, near the heart of the village. The food is spicy, exploding... with flavor, and deeply satisfying. Best ordered family style with a good mix of apps and entrees. Menu highlights included thelamb chops, tiger prawns, and gunpowder dosas. But it was all delicious. And not *too* heavy as far as Indian cuisinegoes. Great service and ambiance. A trendy spot for good reason! Read more

This place is authentically spicy! I guess that?s how they do Southern Indian cuisine. I did ask and they said you cannot... change the level of spiciness and it gets spicy! You are also given a 90 minute warning so this would be great if you are on abad date :) the food is good and the service is great. It is well staffed so that?s refreshing. This is right on Greenwichavenue close to the Red line and blue line and around the corner from the west 4th station too. I recommend the snail to startand the deer shank. Both were good when I can feel my tongue from the spices. They also use ponni rice which was pretty good. Similar to a jasmine rice texture. Check this place out! It is nice. A bit pricey so bring your wallet! Read more

Decent service, casual vibe with upbeat music, really good food. We tried the gunpowder dosa, the lamb and the lobster tail.... Everything was spicier than expected so I?d recommend asking for their mildest option if you?re not used to the authentic Indianspice level. There is a private space in the back that looked like can be reserved for large parties. Overall a great southernIndian meal! I?ll surely come back for more. Read more
