First visit to Newport from Hartford area. We ran into a nice women who recommended Scales & Shells when we stopped for lunch in... Putnam. She said it is her favorite restaurant in the world (and it sounded like she had done a lot of traveling). So we had totry it. Absolutely the right decision! The food was fantastic! I had the swordfish special of the evening and my wife ,whodoesn?t care for seafood, had the pasta primavera. Both dishes were excellent! The waiter was a young man but veryknowledgeable about the menu and his service was top rate. I highly recommend Scales & Shells! Read more
We got the fried Diablo and it was a show stopper! You can choose your amount of heat and enjoy! The lobster was soooo good!... Great local find outside of the busy Newport touristy area. Highly recommend! Read more

Overpriced and ranged fr mediocre to bad, really disappointed. It started with the bread just being a cold loaf brought to the... table. The fried calamari was done in a batter and was chewy and greasy. The seafood pasta was just ok. They even charge formarinara sauce to go with the bad calamari. Read more
We got in early at Scales. Exactly at 5pm and we were the first customer in. 30 minutes later the restaurant started to fill up... the tables with guests. And before i know it the restaurant was packed and with guest waiting outside. We ordered the lobsterfra diavola for 2 at $65 which 4 people can eat this and Omg this dish is the most delicious. The sauce has a hint of spicy init which escalates all your taste buds having you wanting more. Now i know why this place get packed so fast. Read more
I completely forgot to take a picture before I ate, I was a bit hungry. I had the black sea bass, which was extra smokey and... bland. The relish in the side was delicious and gave the fish some flavor along with the lemon wedge on my plate. The Sangriawas decent. I swear Americans need a lesson from Spain. Spain has the best Sangria I've ever had. This restaurant doesn't takereservations which is much needed. My friend and I went to several that needed a reservation and had a 1-2 hrs wait. The waitwas 45 min, still long but we were able to eat the swordfish fingers at the bar which was delicious. No pictures for thateither. ???? Read more
My husband and I were in Newport celebrating our anniversary and decided to have dinner at Scales & Shells. This was our first... visit. They do not take reservations. We got there at 7PM on a Monday and outdoor and indoor dining had a wait. However, the barwas open. The bartender, Kevin, was great with our drinks and dinner. Dinner was delicious! Read more
