Reviews for Comal Next Door in Oakland, CA
Great food, and drinks. Price is ok but I'd like better food service. Didn't refill drinks or check on us. Service similar to... fast food joint. I'll come back again to see if it improves. Read more
It satisfies a certain craving. I enjoy the burritos (including the breakfast burrito) and the chips, guacamole, and salsas the... most. To me those are the stars, but the tacos are just okay and I don't really recommend the burrito bowls (though temptingwhen I want the flavor but sometime lighter). The burrito bowls might be better without the cheese, which is good in a tortilla, but just sort of clumps up in the bowl. Read more
I was pleasantly surprised by this place across the street from Lake Merritt. Visited on a Sunday afternoon. It was pretty busy,... but had sufficient seating indoors and some outdoor seating as well. Dog friendly. The achiote chicken taco was my favorite.Although I wouldn't consider the buttermilk fried chicken torta to be very Mexican, it was freaking delicious, so who cares.Definitely worth trying. Reasonably priced, great service, and yummy food! What's not to love? Read more
The carnitas and el pastor were good enough to make me want to try the chicken and beef barbacoa. All four tasted pretty... similar. Fresh ingredients and satisfying, but not exciting enough to want to come back for at least a month or two. Read more
The carnitas burrito was swimming in grease. It was completely soggy, almost all meat, almost no rice or other goodies. I had... high hopes based on other reviews, but was severely disappointed. Read more
Very tasty, sizable chicken burrito. The margarita is delicious (and they use the good ice!). The service is friendly and fast.... If you are looking for an "authentic" style Mexican joint, this isn't it. But if you are hungry and looking for good food at adecent price (for the area), you can do much worse. I will definitely return to CND. Read more
If it weren't for what you're about to read, I would give this place four or five stars, but food safety has to come... first. There was a quarter-inch rock in my burrito. We're talking tooth breakage. We're talking dental work the cost of ahundred burritos if I had bit down harder. How hard is it to sort stones out of your pinto beans? It is profoundlydisappointing that I cannot trust this restaurant to provide food that doesn't contain foreign objects. If you're reading thisand thinking "It's just the one time and they're hard-working folks, cut them some slack!" then know that this is not the firstforeign object I have found in my burrito from Comal. Previously, I found a 9-inch piece of string in my burrito. So yeah, donewith this place. Read more
A great new local's spot in the old Barlago space on Grand Avenue overlooking Lake Merritt in Adam's Point neighborhood. Outdoor... seating for those with dogs and continuing concerns regarding Covid. The Mexican cuisine is excellent as are the specialtycocktails. My favorite beer on tap is the Fuerza Lager. Friday evenings with renown World Music DJ Jose Ruiz is going to createa meetup scene unlike any currently offered on the Lake. I'm a big fan! Read more
