Ordered bowl (no rice). Chicken very dry and overcooked. Hard even to cut. Tzatziki sauce was odd, very thick and flavorless.... Salad fresh but mostly chopped romaine lettuce with very small sprinkling of other ingredients. Pita bread put on top of salad,so instead of ?crisp charred? it was soggy. Read more

I visited on a Wednesday evening after seeing this place driving through this shopping center. The interior looks predictably... clean given the newness of the location and also bright with accents of blue shades nodding to what I assume the Greek flag. Iplaced an order through their website which proved easy enough to navigate and get a reasonable pickup time. My order was justbeing finished as I arrived, so I was pleased with the timing of my pickup. Staff seemed engaged with preparing meals forcustomers, and I left with a smiling server handing my bag to me. My order consisted of appetizer portions of spanakopita andfelafel, a gyro chicken platter with fries and a salad, an extra pita, and almond cookies. The spanakopita pastry was light andflaky enough, but the filling struck me somewhat bitter for whatever reason. The felafel looked darker than other versions Iate, but the inside tasted fine and even had tiny chick pea halves for extra texture and flavor. The tzatziki sauce had anherbiness more than tanginess that might appeal to others but not me unfortunately. The most notable disappointment for me wasthe chicken which looked unappetizing and felt dry and mostly unflavorful (maybe I should have opted for the grilled chickeninstead). The fries were okay for surviving a short ride home. The salad was bright and had a good balance of ingredients, somaybe I would pair an entree salad with a grilled protein if I ate here again. The pita was likewise dry and a little chewyinstead of light and airy as I have enjoyed others. The cookies were another bright spot with a crumbly melt-in-the-mouthtexture and a subtle almond flavor. My total cost came to a fraction under $40 excluding tax and tip, so ordinarily I wouldfeel good about having dinner for two $20 bills. However the quality of this food left me wanting better chicken and morebrightness overall in what I ate. I am not sure I have a strong inclination to return on my own, but I could be talked into Read more

My first visit to Souvlakibar was Tuesday, April 19, 2022. No gyros offered, which was my motivation for coming reading on... Souvlakibar website that they had gyro. Beef souvlaki I ordered was dry and flavorless. Pita bread it came on did not have apocket, was thick and interior was spongy. It did not look or taste like any pita bread I have ever had. It was more like naanthan pita. Baklava was also dry and top layer of filo burned not having even a hint of butter drizzled between filo sheets noron top. Feta crumble was pretty good and fries were indeed greek style, meaning that they were a bit soggy. My second, followupvisit, was Thursday, April 21. Lentil soup was fine. Not much can go wrong making lentil soup. Spanakopita was appetizertriangle shape and portion. It was dry as cobwebs and bland. You are supposed to smear the bottom of the baking pan with oliveoil, drizzle olive oil between every two sheets of filo, and drizzle olive oil on the top before it goes in the oven. And, ohyeah, put olive oil in the chopped spinach, ricotta cheese, and feta cheese filling mixture. Spanakopita is supposed to be moistand flavorful. Cheese and spinach filling portion ratio was way off. It was about 2/3 cheese to 1/3 spinach. Thoroughlyout-of-balance. All I could bear was one bite and pushed it aside. Mythos lager beer was fair that I had on both visits. Menulists names of greek dishes but Souvlakibar does not deliver authentic cuisine showing intention, care, and knowledge in mytaste opinion. Not an Opa experience. My early adult life was spent in reasonable proximity to Chicago?s Greek Town during theearly 1970?s and I enjoyed many celebrations at the renown, now legend, Parthenon Restaurant (permanently closed in 2016 after48 years in business) on Halstead Street. Parthenon, where saganaki (named after the two handle frying pan sagani that it ismade in) was invented, was raucous. Free flowing Roditis and Retsina and the smell of olive oil and fresh pita was Read more
