The Hilltop is one of my favorite places to go. First, check their hours online because they are more limited than we are used... to now a days. Secondly, make a reservation if you can because they get busy. The food is served family style so the only thingthat you are ordering is your entree. All meals come with mashed potatoes and gravy, a salad, green beans, corn, delicioushomemade yeast rolls, carrots and celery, beets, and tomato juice! Everything is very well prepared and tastes like grandma madeit. You are GOING to leave full. This does not even count their massive selection of desserts that include traditional favoritesthat are rarely found anymore such as persimmon pudding. They also have an adorable little gift shop offering county styleitems and old time candy. Dress is casual. Read more
Delicious fried chicken. My standard for fried chicken in Indiana is offered by Nashville House in Nashville, In. This is just... as good, or better. Mashed potatoes were also very good. Canned corn and green beans. Not so good. We loved our waitress who wasvery friendly, and efficient. I've visited this restaurant several times. Just wish the vegetables were better. Read more
Took the family here for a nice meal as I'd heard good things. Steak was excellent and cooked to order, sides were fine. Fried... chicken would have been excellent except there was a fishy taste to it, I suppose from the frier oil. It was still good enoughwe'll be back to try it again since if it didn't have the fishy taste it would have been the best fried chicken I've had a longtime. Service was good, we didn't have a reservation but we didn't have to wait super long either and the lobby is cozy enoughthat while you're waiting for your name to be called it's not uncomfortable. I worked here in the late 90's and ate there again after all these years. Though ownership has changed hands, the food, service,... and setting is the same of not better. You'll get more did than you can eat. Their signature ribeye is outstanding and the friedchicken is terrific. You really can't go wrong. The setting is scenic and relaxing. This truly is a treasure of Owen County anda highlight of Spencer! Read more
1st time going to the Hilltop for me and my family. We went with our church family who frequently go. It's a very family feel. I... have never been to a place like this. It was so Thanksgiving dinner feel to it. You ordered your choice of meat and the rest isbrought out to your table and set down in bowls to be passed around mashed potatoes and yest rolls and corn and green beanssalad and it took me back to my young days when family dinner ment sitting and talking and having many laughs.... Theexperience alone was worth it . The establishment it's sitting high up with a beautiful country views and beautiful cabin lookan interior with beautiful chimney and fireplace. The food was pretty good. I enjoyed the catfish. The use rolls were not to myliking at all I'm used to homemade yeast rolls. What's your maid a little different than these. But if you really want that timewith your family and friends and just putting your phones away and actually passing the bowls around the table and having thatconversation and having to interact with each other it was worth every second of it.
