Update: Highly recommend on rainy days, and weekday lunch time. Less people, no wait, and food comes out perfect. Dosas long... and crispy, not floppy and folded, deep fried items were fried well, not greasy, even masala tea actually came out before wewere done eating, not half an hour after! Original: Our favorite local watering hole for comfort food that has withstood thetest of time. It is a vegetarian place but as meat eaters, we don't miss it when we come here. As with anywhere, consistencycan be an issue but overall, they get it right. Some days dosas can be a bit thick or soggy, or a tad burnt and bitter, butthey are better than other dosas that we have tried up and down the Peninsula. No food has a buttery ghee odor or taste whichis great for us. The green and orange sides that come with dosas are not overwhelmingly coconuty like they can be at other dosaplaces (except of course, for the pale green coconut chutney). For those who dislike coconut, the green one is the leastcoconuty but it depends on the day. The spicy Kara dosas are our favorite, as are the channa bhaturas. They can be a bit oilyand thick at times, but the chole masala that comes with is always delicious and the right consistency. The idlis and uthapamare also solid. Recommend dine-in over to-go for dosas in particular. Dosas lose their crisp edges, and sometimes you getsomeone else's order so do check before leaving. Good to know before you go:. Dont go too hungry as you will have to wait (thisis why we don't have more pics, we generally are so starved by the time we get our food that we just tear in) The procedure isyou go inside, place your order and pay, then wait for them to seat you. The food sometimes arrives right away, but sometimesone dish arrives, and the next arrives after you are done with the first. Sometimes they forget, so you might have to remindone of the staff. Particularly the chai has a tendency to be forgotten, where we sit with empty plates Read more

Madras Groceries Supermarket, Food Court, and South Indian Veg Restaurant takes-up almost the entire strip! You can get a lot... accomplished in one trip. The restaurant is one well-oiled machine, doing take-out orders, helping customers waiting to beseated, and serving hot freshly made delicious cuisine that is nearly authentic. Take your chance, it may seem crowded, but youwill get served. Read more

We have been coming here for many years given the choices of South Indian restaurants in the Bay Area it's been awhile since we... last visited so thought of checking it out.... They have ample seating space inside & outdoor. Only thing is don't come hereexpecting it to be a quite restaurant it's extremely noisy ( inside) especially during weekends morning after 10 am having saidthat we were there by 8.30 am & saw the crowd started coming in few minutes later family as well as bachelors .... It's a verypopular place. This time we tried - Medhu Vada Sambhar - the vadas were soft & nicely soaked in sambhar which was pipping hot.My husband enjoyed it very much. Mini Idli plate - mini Idli's were soft & I could taste little ghee on it again it went verywell with the pipping hot sambhar & all the 3 chutneys. We shared the dish happily. Paper Masala Dosa - we ordered it crispy soit was not at all greasy while having it. Only thing is we got little disappointed seeing the potato masala which was very lessbut still we loved it. Idli plate- I was craving for more Idli's ... I love soft & pipping hot Idli's very much .... here thetexture is little hard but still it was ok . Onion Rava Dosa - it's been years since I last had it ... it was good but I wouldhave preferred it to be more brown. Veg Biryani (from weekend menu section) Togo to have latter ... which was nice . Andlastly 1 filter coffee without which any South Indian breakfast is incomplete.... It was nice & strong. Here the service isexcellent, they are very attentive the moment they see any empty dishes they will come & pick it up which is nice .... morespace to have especially if it's a small table. Will come back again soon!!! Everything came piping hot so enjoyed having ourbreakfast... I would have love to Read more

My friend recommended Madras Café for authentic South Indian food. It was so delicious! I ordered the tomato dosa and loved it.... Others also said the mysore masala dosa was their favorite. The dosa portion sizes were generous and they came with 3 chutneysand sambar. The restaurant was pretty busy when we went on a Wednesday night, but the wait was worth it. Would love to comeback. Good experience at the extremely popular Madras Café. We decided to reach at the opening time 8.30 am from ~40 miles away,... because we didn't find a seat on a previous afternoon visit. They run out of space pretty soon, I heard. Sambhar and chatni wereokay. I was expecting them to be a little more typical. Dosas, Uttapams, Idli and Medu Wada were amazing. Very delicious! Filtercoffee wasn't up to my expectation. Either the coffee was too strong or the sugar was less sweet, even after adding so much ofit. My FOMO is over, finally. I would recommend trying if you are in the area but travelling specifically for it isn't needed. Read more

So yummy! This was my first time having proper South Indian food, and it was very good. It's located in a plaza next to the... Madras supermarket, and line was out the door for a Thursday lunch. There was a nonstop flow of take-out orders too. This placeis popular for a reason! They are working like busy bees in the kitchen, but it still understandably took a while for our foodto come out. Love that they are so low-waste as well. The tomato masala dosa was definitely my favorite. The tomato masalaflavor is complex and delicious, and went well with the perfectly cooked (chewy, but with the slightest crunch - reallyinteresting texture!) dosa. I loved it! The scoop of curried potatoes in the middle make it more filling, and the chutneys weredelicious. The onion rava masala dosa was completely different from the tomato masala dosa - it's completely fried and toppedwith onions. I liked the texture of the regular dosa more Update: I went back and tried the Mysore Masala Dosa and I LOVED it.It's like the tomato masala dosa but with chili pepper. It's not too spicy though! I think this will be my new regular. Thefilter Coffee is delicious too. One thing to note is the wait does get very long on the weekends for lunch. Tomato Masala Dosa. Read more
