As winter rolls in, so does an opportunity to shamelessly pile on the pounds under our cold-weather clothes – and there’s no better place to do that than at a high-end bakery!  Here are our favorite spots to get fat in Ottawa:

Art-is-in Bakery

Classically trained chef Kevin Mathieson makes masterpieces at this City Centre staple.  His bakery has been named the city’s best restaurant by Ottawa Magazine and featured on the Food Network’s aptly titled You Gotta Eat Here.

Art-is-in functions as a French bakery and as a hearty meal spot serving pizza and burgers that could be its own specialty restaurant even without the pastries.  Just ask for a to-go box for your dessert if you fill up on the lunchtime food.

Life of Pie Bakery

This family-owned spot bills itself as a “scratch bakery” after its hand-made creations.  Their namesake pies are especially well-made, but you can’t go wrong with Life of Pie’s rotating selection of cookies, cupcakes, and scones either.

And yes, their menu is always changing – so you’ll have an excuse to come back!

Beaver Tails Pastries

BeaverTails’ signature pastry is served piping hot to help you survive the long, cold months ahead.  The hand-stretched fried dough is a blank canvas for the toppings of your choice, and goes perfectly with a side of marshmallow hot cocoa.
