When we think of Mexican food in the U.S. it’s more common to reference New Mexico or Texas. Surprisingly Delaware has a hidden Mexican scene that one would only stumble upon by accident. The locals love it and if you happen to be traveling through the historical state be sure to check out at least a few of these restaurants, you won’t be disappointed.

1) Mariachi Restaurant, Rehoboth, Delaware

When walking up to Mariachi Restaurant in Rehoboth you can already tell there is something different and special about this place. Its pink exterior sat right in front of the water is a welcome and fun vibe. And while they certainly serve up Mexican food, they don’t limit the menu there. You can explore all different kinds of Latin American tastes as well as traditional dishes from Spain.

With a focus on using the freshest ingredients, there is not a single dish most wouldn’t love. But if you want to know what’s popular then go ahead and check out their Tostones for starters. Their perfectly fried green plantains should be followed up with Lomo Saltado if you like steak. This is strips of sirloin covered in fresh tomatoes, green peppers, cilantro, onions, and a delish Peruvian sauce.

For those looking for more of a Mexican dish their Huevos Rancheros for the weekend brunch is to die for. Discover Mariachi Restaurants menu in Rehoboth Deleware here!

2) Agave Mexican Restaurant, Lewes, Delaware

Agave Mexican restaurant is so much more than just good food. It’s also a fantastic lounge and tequila bar for locals and visitors. What started as a 30 seat restaurant in 2008 has now become a 105 seat Mexican food joint. While you can certainly order food for just yourself the idea behind it is to incorporate a little culture with an emphasis on sharing plates and snacks.

You can start with something to warm you up like Chicken Tortilla Soup or Mexican Chilli but make sure to save room for some of their other delicious apps. Popular for sharing are their Empanadas or their Super Nachos! But when it comes to entrees they definitely put a spin on a few things that make them unique to who they are. Surf and Turf Burrito is no doubt one of those things.

They also have quite the exquisite drink menu so if you are old enough and a big fan of tequila this is the place to splurge. Find Agave Mexican Restaurants menu in Lewes Delaware here!

3) La Tonalteca, Dover, Delaware

With multiple locations for La Tonalteca, we are focusing on the one in Dover, Delaware although its partner in Milford is a great option as well.  There is so much to love about this place from their Kareoke night to their authentic atmosphere and smells that places you right in Mexico City without the expensive plane ticket. If you’re a big fan of Margaritas then make sure to go on a Wednesday because they are up for grabs at $3.99 apiece!

This menu has everything. In fact, there are over 200 items so let’s talk about some of their best options. Their #220 Flauta under special dinner is a crowd-pleaser. You get to choose from beef or chicken flauta that is seasoned in their house spices, herbs, and yes, beer.  On the side, it comes with rice, beans, and tortillas. Their burritos also get a standing ovation and don’t forget to save room for dessert. While there are quite a few items on the list, rightfully so Churros are named first! 4) Mexican Table, Hockessin, Delaware

With the perfect mix of traditional and contemporary, we needed to find an option known for its fresh and fruit-flavored Sangria! With Jose founding the restaurant in 2011 this restaurant has been serving up authentic Mexican food for a decade. You know this restaurant is serious when they have three different types of nachos to choose from!

A few of their house specialties are their claim to fame starting with the Chile Relleno. This is a Souffle battered poblano pepper super studded with mashed potatoes and cheesy goodness. It also includes a tomato sauce and a side of refried beans. It’s tradition to the T! And if you are looking for something like tacos there are plenty to choose from. Whether you like meat, seafood, or veggies, they have it all! View Mexican Table’s menu in Hockessin, Delaware here!

5) El Tapatio, Bear, Delaware

El Tapatio has been in service for more than 20 years with a full-service bar and some of the best authentic Mexican food offered in Delaware. If you’re not a tequila person they do have beer and wine! These still go great with a number of their featured dishes that are raved about by the locals. Their Molcajete Tapatio is something you likely haven’t heard before, it’s marinated strips of chicken, flank, steak, and the best part chorizo. A protein-packed dish with red sauce, avocado, queso, and more! While you’re probably already on the way, there is more to see!

There are a number of fantastic options for enchiladas and burritos for those who want to focus on more simple dishes. But that doesn’t mean that you should steer clear of their seafood because traditional Mexican does make a mean shrimp cocktail! Discover El Tapatio’s menu in Bear, Delaware here!
